Loughrea Teagasc office to close in March
BY UNA SINNOTT The Teagasc office in Loughrea will close at the end of March, it was announced this week. Teagasc informed staff of the imminent closure this week, and it is understood the five staff at the Loughrea facility will be moved to new offices in Athenry. The former Mellows Agricultural College premises in Athenry will also become home to the authority's rural economy research operations and rural development section in the coming months. Dep Paul Connaughton has hit out at the imminent closure of the Athenry office, which was earmarked for sale along with nine other local offices around the country as part of costcutting measures introduced by Teagasc last year. Dep Connaughton said he was disappointed with Teagasc and with Minister for Agriculture Mary Coughlan for allowing the Athenry facility, which provides information and training for hundreds of farmers, to be closed. "The office in Loughrea provided an excellent centre for training young farmers as well as providing vital professional information and guidance to all farmers in many aspects of farming," he said. " I sincerely regret the closure of this service in an area of traditional good farmers, many of whom have benefited immensely by having direct access to this Teagasc office. "Nowadays the official jargon in the world of community development is the provision of a service in a rural community which is both professional, easily accessible, and fully utilised by the users of the service," Dep Connaughton continued. "The Teagasc office in Loughrea met all the above criteria but that did not stop the Teagasc board from knifing the Loughrea centre. Many

farmers feel a deep sense of loss over this unnecessary closure." The premises, which is owned by Teagasc, is expected to be put up for sale shortly.

Lorraine Robinson, manager of Ivor's Motorcycles, and her brother Ivor jnr hand over the keys of a new moped to Jon Richards of Galway Bay FM. The moped will be auctioned on air this Saturday to raise funds for survivors of the south Asia tsunami.
