Have a coffee and help the hospice
BY MARY O'CONNOR The Galway Hospice Foundation's annual coffee morning has raised almost 500,000 for the local charity since the novel fundraiser began in 1993. Now the organisation is appealing again to the public to support this nationwide initiative which is held every September with all the funds raised in each area going directly to local services. The concept of Ireland's biggest coffee morning is simple, explains Michael Craig, the hospice's fundraising manager. "All over Ireland on Thursday 15 September, in factories, offices, schools, hospitals etc coffee mornings will take place and people attending will be asked to contribute 2 for their cup of coffee. This money will go directly to the local hospice, in our case, Galway Hospice. No matter how small, each coffee morning makes a difference." He is appealing to people to become coffee morning hosts. "All you have to do is please either fill out the registration form contained in the Coffee Morning advertisement in this paper or contact the fundraising office at Galway Hospice either by telephone on ( 091) 770868 or by email to fundraising@galwayhospice.ie A free promotional pack, containing

ground coffee, posters to display in the locality or at the venue, guest invitations and collection boxes, will be sent to you in advance of September 15th. Anyone who has held a coffee morning in the past should already have received a registration form." The Galway Hospice provides a comprehensive range of palliative care services, which include inpatient, home and day care and bereavement support. The Renmore facility receives the running costs for the in-patient unit from the Health Service Executive Western Area. However, it has not received any State funding since its inception in 1990 for looking after almost 3,500 home and day care patients. "At present, the team of specialist
nursing, medical and social care staff travel the length and breadth of Co Galway on a daily basis to visit and care for almost 120 (predominantly cancer) patients," explains Michael Craig. "The day care service is currently accepting up to 20 patients a week to receive medical/nursing assessments and to avail of the many therapies such as physiotherapy, reflexology, music and art therapy. "Despite costing in excess of 1 million per annum to provide, the continuation and availability of the home care, day care and bereavement support services have been ensured largely by the generosity and support of the people of Galway. Without this support, these services would simply cease to exist."
