Galway's SIMI boss calls for VRT reduction
Local businessman Padraig Keating of O'Sullivan Hansbury and Kenny Motors in Galway is calling for a reduction on Vehicle Registration Tax. Keating, who is the newly elected president of the local NEC branch of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, says Government income from VRT, and VAT from new vehicle sales for the first six months of this year is 1.22 billion, " imposing an unacceptable burden on motorists". In addressing the society's national executive committee, he says Government income from VRT was 792 million. " More than 10 years after the formation of the European single market, Irish consumers still cannot avail of all of its benefit," he says. VRT leads to Irish consumers paying some of the highest post-tax prices for new cars in Europe, even though Ireland's pre-tax prices are generally slightly below the average, according to the EU six monthly analysis. Total taxes (VRT and VAT) represent a massive 56 per cent, 61 per cent, and 73 per cent respectively, of the pre tax price of a vehicle in Ireland. Padraig Keating says the SIMI and its 1,900 members nationwide call on newly elected MEPs to make phasing out VRT, and the immediate refund of VRT on the export of used cars, an issue. The Society of the Irish Motor Industry statistics for July 2004 show that total passenger car registrations for the month were 12,443 - down 5.8 per cent on the same period last year. Year to date statistics (to end July 2004) show passenger car registrations at 134,017 up 7.22 per cent on the same period last year.
