Streets of Galway sets a new record with 1,300 runners
A record 1,300 participants crossed the finish line at the Reebok sponsored Streets of Galway 8K Road Race, which took place in South Park on Saturday evening. While the participants had to contend with some strong winds, the forecasted rain held off for the duration with many participants taking part in the pre-race warm-up with the support of the C h a r t e r e d Physiotherapists of the Western Branch. Making his presence felt from an early stage was current National Cross Country Champion Seamus Power. The former winner and course record holder covered the opening kilometre in 2.38, opening up a gap of 70 yards on the chasing group. Power passed through the 2k mark in 5.36, while the GCH athlete, Gerry Ryan reduced the gap on Power to 40 yards. Former winner Ryan had pulled well clear of the chasing group which included the National 10k runner up Tom Carey of Limerick AC, and the DSD duo of Noel Berkely and Peter Matthews. Power reached the half way mark in 11.32 with the order remaining the same behind. The strong head wind from Seapoint to Grattan Park ruled out any fast times being posted. Ryan continued to chase hard in the last two kilometres, reducing Powers' lead to 20 yards. However the experienced Power had enough in reserve to win comfortably in a time of 23.54 with Ryan finishing second in 24.13, well ahead of the trio of Berkely, Carey, and Matthews. The men's team event was won by Galway she approached the finish line. Three time winner Pauline Curley of Tullamore Harriers finished second in 28.23, while national 10k runner up Sandra Gowran of Sportsworld, had a fine race to finish third in 29.06. Fourth senior woman was Mimi Fallon of the Boston Athletic Assocciation, and the first Galway female athlete to finish was Loughrea's Fionnuala Keane. The women's team event was won by Mayo AC with Sportsworld second. In the women's over 35 veteran category Mayo's Ann Lennon was first in a time of 30.07, while first over 40 was Vera McCool of Mullingar in a time of 32.32. The over 45 category went to Joan Griffin of the Limerick Triathalon Club while first over 50 was Margaret McCauley of Mayo. Crusader's Maura Ni Chearbhaill was the first meet and train finisher, while first junior was Michelle Naughton of Border Ramblers. Among the groups taking part were those from Hewlett Packard, Tyco Healthcare, Galway Sub Aqua Unit and NUIG.

Providing Cashflow for small businesses
W
hile most of the main players in the invoice discounting sector tend to favour established companies with a turnover of more than 1 million, there are some specialist providers who cater for small businesses and start-ups. Celtic Invoice Discounting, which sales and marketing director Rita O'Brien describes as `the only pure invoice discounting company in the country', is one such niche player. `We consider small businesses with debtors of 50 upwards and total debts of 2,000 upwards,' O'Brien said. `while banks look at balance sheets and profits, what is of interest to us is the strength of the debtor'. O'Brien said that Celtic Invoice Discounting does not delve into company background. `We don't look for annual fees, we don't tie our clients into 12 month contracts and we are willing to engage in once-off deals', she said. Very often small companies don't get as much credit from their suppliers as larger companies, according to O'Brien. `After a settling-in period, some customers will insist on extending credit terms, something which many small businesses simply can't fund', she said. Theoretically, this is the ideal scenario for invoice discounting, but
