UNCORKED
HOW TO DECIDE WHAT WINE YOU LIKE...
by Willie Shaw

Farmer believed his Scotty's opens at Wellpark drink was spiked
A retired farmer arrested for drunken and dangerous driving thought young troublemakers in a pub where he had been drinking spiked his drink. Patrick Naughton, Carrarea, Kiltulla, Athenry, pleaded guilty to both offences at Galway District Court this week. Inspector Pat McHugh said another motorist travelling behind the accused on the coast road between Oranmore and Galway on February 29 last noticed Naughton's car weaving dangerously back and over the roadway. On two separate occasions at different locations Naughton's car was observed by this witness veering towards people who were standing at the side of the road. When Naughton's car nearly rear ended another car at traffic lights near Merlin Park the motorist travelling behind him took the keys from his car and called the Gardai. A breath sample taken showed a reading of 80mgs of alcohol per 100mls of breath. Defence solicitor Lorna Burke said her client was a single man who had availed of the farm retirement scheme. He had come to Oranmore on the day to meet friends and believed his drink may have been spiked by youngsters who had been causing trouble in the pub. Judge Mary Fahy said the witness did the right thing by getting Naughton to stay at the lights until the gardai arrived. She fined the accused 350 and disqualified him from driving for two years for drunken driving. She also fined him 300 for dangerous driving and disqualified him for a further 12 months. Scotty's Sunset Cafe - a sister outlet to Scotty's on Middle Street and The Sunset Grill in Glasan Village - has opened in the new Atlantic Homecare Superstore in the Wellpark Centre. Made-to-order sandwiches, salad plates, panini, and homemade soup are just some of the mouthwatering options on the menu. The cafe is open from 10am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 12 to 5pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays. A pre-order lunch option is available by calling (091) 380842 and there is ample free car parking available.

T

his is perhaps the biggest problem for people when drinking a wine. Picture yourself in a shop looking at row upon row of bottles. Some have labels while some you cannot pronounce but you have to choose something that either you or someone else will like. Do the following scenarios sound familiar; you grab the same bottle you always buy (and you end up saying afterwards that you really should try something different) or you by a bottle because it is on special offer that was either placed prominently or just looked inviting. Either way you may end up with buyers remorse. All of this is because you may have never thought much about the wine you drink. So I would like to suggest a couple of ways to help you buy what you will like. Start with your current favourite wine. Mark it with a score out of 10 and write this on the label (having finished the bottle) and note the grape type e.g. chardonnay, merlot, shiraz etc. For your next 4 or 5 purchases select the same grape variety but from a different country or a different price bracket. Similarly, when finished mark it out of 10.

TIP: The best time to mark the bottle is immediately after dinner. (The following morning could be a bit hazy). After 5 or 6 different bottles you should have a much better idea of your favourite style and be better able to make a more educated selection. The next step is to repeat this for a different grape variety and you are on your way to becoming a wine guru. TIP: Whenever you are buying a new bottle it is usually worthwhile asking for advice while saying what your current favourite wine is. This will allow the salesperson to make a suggestion based on their own knowledge of that wine and perhaps some excellent value/quality wine that you may be unaware of. This also works in a restaurant situation when you are unfamiliar with the wines offered. Tell them your favourite and they should be able to make a suggestion. Both wine waiters and wine sales people love to talk about wine so don't be shy!!!. Another great way to increase your knowledge is to go to any wine tasting that you see advertised. Try and be disciplined and focus on the types of wines you have been drinking recently and make sure you write down the name of any new wine you really like. Also do not be afraid to ask your Off-Licence if they have any wines open for tasting as it is quite often the case that while they may not have them placed in front of you that there will be a Red and a White open particularly at weekends.

On the topic of names of wines, there is a brand of wine from Australia called 'Yellow Tail' (now that's what I call an easy to remember name). It's varieties include Shiraz, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Verdelho and are all priced at an amazing _9.99. If you like any of the aforementioned grapes and have not tasted Yellow Tail you are missing a real treat.
