BY KHALID SALLABI Upon the sighting of the new moon in mid October, Muslims all over the world, including Galway's large Muslim community, will start celebrating the fasting month of Ramadhan - one of the five foundational practices of Islam. The five `pillars' of Islam are declaration of faith in one God and that Mohammed is the last messenger of God, daily prayers, fasting of Ramadhan, Zakat (paying money to the poor), and Hajj (to visit Mecca once in your lifetime if you can). The intention behind the practice of fasting is to attain the station of inner piety or taqwa (God consciousness). Taqwa has been defined in many ways; Ali Bin Abi Taleb defined it as: "To be satisfied with little, obedience to God's command, and preparation for the final journey." The Lord says that a man's good acts are recompensed many times, from 10 times to 700 times. The person who observes the fast gives up food, drink and sensual desires for Allah's sake during the period of daylight. For a fasting person there are two pleasures, firstly the joy when they break their fast and secondly another joy when they meet their Lord. Ramadhan is the best spiritual fuel that sustains us for the rest of the year. Its beginning is mercy, its middle is forgiveness; its end is protection from the hellfire. The moment of breaking the fast is a blessed time; God has promised to fulfil all the prayers made at that time. May we remember all who are dear to us and those who are less fortunate. We take this opportunity to pray for all suffering people around the world, and ask God to bring His Peace and Justice to all. Ramadhan Mubarak (we wish you all a very blessed Ramadhan).
