Nigerian drove car with false insurance disc
A Nigerian man who has been living in Ireland for three years and is seeking asylum here drove a car with a false insurance disc, Galway District Court heard this week. Larry Osayi, 70 Ros Chaoin, Roscam, Galway, pleaded guilty to driving without insurance, tax and an NCT certificate when the offences were detected by Garda Ronan McMahon at Sandy Road, Galway, on January 22 last. Defence solicitor, Olivia Traynor, said her client had since insured and taxed the car and had obtained a provisional licence as well. She said he bought the car last December and accepted he should not have been driving without insurance. Judge Mary Fahy said she would not impose a disqualification because Osayi had no previous convictions and has since obtained insurance. However, she imposed fines totalling 600 for driving without insurance and for having a false insurance disc displayed on the car.

Suspended sentence for stealing bottle of vodka
A Georgian refugee was given a suspended one-month sentence at Galway District Court this week for stealing a bottle of vodka. Soso Maisuradze, Great Western Hostel, Frenchville Lane, Knocknacarra, Galway, pleaded guilty to the theft which occurred at Dunnes Stores, Edward Square, Galway, last Sunday. Inspector Noel Kelly said the accused had failed to turn up before a court in Cork to answer a similar charge of theft there and a bench warrant had been issued for his arrest there. He had been arrested in Galway last Sunday in Dunnes Stores and kept in custody pending his court appearance. Defence solicitor, Valerie Corcoran, said her client was a refugee in receipt of 19 per week. He was an graduate of economics in his own country and was awaiting tickets from family so that he could return home, she said. Judge Mary Fahy sentenced the accused to one month in prison for the theft in Galway and suspended it for twelve months. She imposed a further one-month sentence for failing to turn up in court in Cork and suspended that also.
