Boston Scientific employees raise 35,000 for cancer care in memory of colleague
BY MARY O'CONNOR Boston Scientific workers have raised 35,000 for a local cancer charity in memory of a former employee who lost his battle with the condition last year. John Lane, the director of the company's facilities' department, died on December 6. His colleagues and friends decided to commemorate his memory and mark the significant contribution he made to their lives by raising 25,000 for the local charity Cancer Care West which is building a 4 cancer care centre on the grounds of UCHG. Their determined efforts throughout the year resulted in them exceeding their target and raising 35,000 through a car park charge day, a 10K fun walk and a sponsored 12 hour shift silence. Sean Dowd, the company's facilities department manager, said this exemplifies what can be achieved when employees come together with a common purpose. It also showed the regard people had for the late John Lane. Bernard Collins, the chairman of Cancer Care West, applauded the workers' efforts in raising " such an extraordinary amount". " These funds will greatly assist us in meeting our goal of building a world class lodge and psychological support centre at UCHG for patients and family members living with cancer in the west of Ireland." The three storey patient care facility will be located on a half acre site and will include 18 twin and 12 single bedrooms, as well as a living and kitchen area. The facility, which will serve people from counties Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal and Clare, will enable family members or close friends of patients to stay with them while they receive radiotherapy treatment at the west's biggest hospital. The initiative will be the first such patient centre outside Dublin and Cork. While some similarities will exist between the Dublin and Cork 'Ark' centres for cancer sufferers, the local CCW lodge will have its own unique blend of complementary therapies and specialist personnel. Cancer affects one in three people. Every year, almost 20,000 Irish people more than 1,000 in Co Galway - are diagnosed with the condition. It is the second most common cause of death in the west. The disease can occur at any age but is more frequently seen in older people. Boston Scientific is the largest medical device company in the world and employees more than 15,000 people worldwide. It opened its first Irish plant in Galway in 1994 with 40 employees and has grown to become the largest multinational employer in the west of Ireland. currently employing 2,800 people
