Eve Finn

captures the essence of the festival
BY ANDREW HAMILTON It is unfortunate that one of the most challenging and unique events of the Galway Arts Festival will probably be viewed by the fewest people. This is the unfortunate reality for pirate radio woman, Margaretta D'Arcy who has converted her kitchen, which also doubles as a broadcast studio, into a living museum which celebrates pirate women's radio from Galway around the world. Stepping into Margaretta D'Arcy's front room you can't help but be struck by the sense of history and a real presence that seems to seep out from the walls and floor. Every free space of wall is covered with a collage of clipping and posters from women's radio projects from all around the world. A small table nestling in the corner is covered with thousands of CDs and tapes of women's broadcasts, stories, and music. Margaretta first began to broadcast her pirate woman's radio in Galway in 1987 and since then has dealt with just about every taboo subject that mainstream radio was less willing to tackle. She reached the national headlines in the 1980s when the station was reported for giving out information about abortion and down the year has constantly flouted the laws on censorship. As part of this year's Galway Arts Festival Margaretta has decided to offer the public a chance to take part in a uniquely active and challenging radio experience. She has opened up her kitchen, and indeed her life, to the public and invited people to come on air and experience first hand the joys of free and open public expression. As Margaretta readily admits her

CATS:
Oscar is a very special cat. He was a loyal companion to his elderly female owner, until she died recently, leaving Oscar with no home and no one to care for him. He is a fine, healthy, 10-year-old, neutered tom cat, who is quite shy, and would be best suited to a home where there are no other animals and no young children. He is house trained to a litter tray, but prefers to go outside to attend to his toilet needs. Oscar is very vocal and is loves 'talking' to you, and he really thrives when he

has company, so he would be best suited to someone who is at home for most of the time. He has been in the one home for the past 10 years and is therefore going to find it difficult to re-adjust to new premises, but with tlc and patience, Oscar will be happy to live out the rest of his years with the right companion. Is there anyone out there who would be prepared to take Oscar into their home and heart? He is such a good cat, and will reward the right person with faithful service. Eve: is a beautiful, gentle all black female cat, who lost an eye. She is a very friendly puss who enjoys lots of contact and attention. Poor Eve was found straying in Galway and was almost killed. She is now settling in to her new surroundings in the sanctuary and is looking for a good, gentle owner who will offer her years of affection.

been mucked about by so many people in the past. This three-year-old pet has been homed with several owners, who for one reason or another, were unable to hold on to him, and so has ended up back where he started. He's a great guy and deserves to find a permanent home with serious owners. If you can give this commitment, go and meet Finn - you won't be disappointed. Lucky: is a smart, happy, boisterous terriercross dog - just look at him laughing! Lucky is looking for a stable and happy home for lots of fun and walks. He needs to be introduced to strangers slowly as he is very protective of 'his family', and takes his job as housedog very seriously. Lucky will make for a very loyal pet and would be an asset to any family. Can you make today Lucky's lucky day?

pirate radio exploits are more for the broadcasters themselves than for the people listening. The true experience lies in exploring the real freedom of the medium and challenging your own inhibitions on air rather than just passively listening. "It [being on air] alters people, just like the native Americans when they pass the stick around," said Mrs D'Arcy. "It removes all the superficial chattiness and brings the

conversations into focus." If you would like to take a very special and free tour into the world of pirate radio then visit 10 St Bridget's Place Lower, Woodquay between 12 noon and 6pm from July 12 to July 31. The station's transmitter has a three mile broadcast radius and can be found somewhere over 100fm. In the spirit of Margaretta's adventure, how to find the exact frequency will require some work from you.
