3.5 million to be spent on Bohermore revamp
BY SINEAD MCGOVERN Almost 3.5 million will be spent refurbishing houses in the Bohermore area over the next two years, in a development that will see 25 houses receive a major overhaul. Twenty-four houses in St Finbarrs Terrace and one in the adjoining St Anthony's Terrace are to benefit from the works, which is to be carried out under the Remedial Works Programme 2004. Work is expected to commence in the next three weeks. The modernisation of the houses, five of which have been vacant for a time, involves the demolition of existing extensions, and the provision of a new one which will include a new kitchen, a ground floor bathroom, and a stairwell to the first floor which in turn will provide a landing, a hot press, and a shower room. The houses will also be refurbished, re-plastered, re-wired, and will be equipped with new doors, window, and an off-street car park. They will also be fitted with solid fuel central heating. The initiation for the overhaul was born as far back at 1999 when PD councillor Terry O'Flaherty was campaigning for election in the area. On the advice of her colleague, Bobby Molloy who was then the Minister for Housing and Urban renewal, Cllr O'Flaherty placed a notion of motion before the then Galway Corporation to have modernisation works carried out. Then motion was granted, and a report was drawn up and submitted to the Department of Environment for grant assistance. Some delays were incurred because of the location of some of the houses involved. While they are in LA estates, some of the other houses in the estate are now privately owned and discussions were required. Cllr O'Flaherty is delighted that the time has come now for the work to commence. "I am very pleased for the residents that these works are to be completed shortly," she said. "I'm personally delighted that my motion was the kick start that this overdue project required. I will take great personal delight in watching the progress being made, and am looking forward to this project coming to fruition."
