MARY O'CONNOR Making up for Christmas
Christmas is just around the corner and everyone is getting ready to party. By now, invitations should be slipping through your letterbox.
You wonder what should you wear to that special soiree or New Year's Eve get together and how you can achieve a festive makeup look that will last the pace and the rigours of partying. Here are some tips to get you started:Applying lip colour with an applicator or brush gives a longer lasting finish. Vary shades from day to evening and season to season. Glosses are big news for night-time. outer corner of the eye when applying mascara because this will create definition.

9. The perfect pout.
Lipstick adds colour to your face and should complement your natural skin tone. To add definition in a barely detectable way, outline your lips in a natural shade of lip liner and fill the lip area with the same shade. It can be used on its own with gloss as an effective way of staining the lips. Be sure to blend well and press the lips together to seal in the colour. If you want a more dramatic look, choose one of the season's hottest shades to bring your lips alive.

1. Preparation.
Make sure your skin is cleansed properly. A creamy cleanser is ideal for dehydrated skin. Put some on a cotton pad and apply it gently to your face. Avoid dragging the skin. Use a light moisturiser and apply it sparingly. Work from the centre of the forehead, blending the product in well and down the central panel of the face.

7. Spare your blushes.
Blusher is a great way to give the skin a radiant glow and balances and links up colour on the eyes and lips. Applying it under the cheekbones gives more shape to the face and makes the cheekbones look higher and more prominent. To make the face look rounder, apply to the apples of the cheeks. Aim for a rounded colour rather than a prominent line across the cheekbone. If you just want to look healthy, dab the tiniest hint of pale pink on the apples of your cheeks. For a rosier hue, dust it onto your cheekbones or all over your face.

10. Heaven scent.
Perfume adds the finishing touch to every look. It plays a vital almost indefinable role in our lives. Like the clothes we wear, it makes a statement about us. It can suggest confidence, femininity, a sensitive nature or romantic soul. It can also affect our mood and that of the people around us. Heavy perfumes tend to soothe the mind while fresh, light ones stimulate, even revitalise.

2. Cover-ups.
Concealers are an important beauty aid and can be used under or over foundations to lift shadows and soften blemishes and fine lines. It can also be applied under the eyes to camouflage dark shadows and worked out onto the cheekbones. Opt for a creamy one which will glide on effortlessly. If you tend to have high colouring, this will do the trick. Using a sponge will help you deliver a fine application.

3. Laying the foundation.
When choosing a foundation, opt for one that suits your skin type. Do you have a shiny complexion or is it balanced or dehydrated? Are some fine lines creeping in around your eyes and lips? A natural looking foundation will enhance your natural colouring and disguise any imperfections. If you cannot find your ideal shade try mixing a few colours. When applying make-up, begin at the forehead and use a tapping motion, moving towards the centre of the face. You will not need a lot of coverage around the outer part. Make sure every area is covered. Paint it over the lips also because this will outline their natural shape.

make-up stays in place and prevents shine. Beware of applying powder too liberally as it can look cakey. Opt for loose matte powder and apply it with a powder applicator or pad onto the central panel of your face. Cotton wool is another option. Its fibres retain the powder and allows you to gently place it into an area that require coverage. Remember, less is more and too much powder will accentuate fine lines.

5. Accentuate your eyes.
Use a large eyeshadow brush to apply a base colour, working from the inner corner of the eye over the eyelid and up to the eyebrow. When you have a predominance of colour on the lid, you should then soften it up. This will open up the eye and create a base. Mixing classic colours with the season's latest shades is a great way of extending your choice. Eyebrows frame the face and should be shaped to create a groomed look. Filling them in, especially if they are sparse, and brushing them upwards will give you a wide-awake appearance. Use short feathery strokes to apply the colour. Their intensity should reflect the depth of your eye make-up.

To achieve a smouldering look, use a kohl pencil to outline your eyes. You can create a softer look by applying it along the lash line and blend it with the latex tip or your finger. Applying eyeliner close to the roots of the lashes make the eyelashes look thicker and more defined. Using soft feathery strokes to apply the colour will allow you to build it gradually until the desired depth is achieved. Kohl can also be applied along the inner rim of the eye. For a classic sophisticated eyeliner effect, apply a liquid line along the upper lashline only. Mascara adds the finishing touch to eye make-up. It should be applied to the bottom lashes first combing through from root to tip. Use a zig-sag motion to apply it to the top lashes to guarantee an even application. Apply a second coat to build volume and add definition.

Pencils help to prevent colour bleeding and give a precise, finished look to the lips.

The key to every great look is mascara. Look slightly down when applying it to get the best effect. Combing the lashes as you apply mascara pushes the product into the root and helps curls them. Pay attention to the

6. Getting lippy.
Lipstick adds colour to your face and should complement your natural skin tones. To add definition, outline your lips in a natural shade of lipliner. Ensure the lip pencil is taken right to the corners of the mouth so there is no gap when smiling.

4. Powder points.
Set your base make-up by brushing or pressing on loose powder. This will ensure your
