Chinese men told to leave Ireland by Monday
Three Chinese men who attacked with iron bars another Chinese man in Salthill last November because of a dispute over winnings in a casino, were given until next Monday to leave Ireland and return to China or else go to prison. A fourth Chinese man, known only the "the Monkey", who is believed to have been the ringleader, is still being sought by gardai in connection with the assault which occurred in a laneway at Salthill, Galway, before midnight on November 30 last year. Ning Qi (27), with a rental address at, 7 Rockville Apartments, Salthill; Tao Liu (27), no fixed abode; and Zung Wang (21), c/o Eyre Square Hotel, Eyre Square, Galway, all pleaded guilty at Galway Circuit Criminal Court this week to assaulting Peng Li, at Quincentenniel Drive, Salthill, causing him harm, contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act, 1997. Sergeant Frank Larkin gave evidence that all of the accused had come to Ireland on the pretext of learning English but none of them had attended college since arriving here in 2002. All of them, he said, had worked in restaurants and hotels and had little interest in learning English. He said that a dispute with the injured man over winnings from a casino machine of asome 50 in Salthill some weeks earlier had led the Monkey to initiate the attack and he accepted that the other three had joined in because they feared the Monkey and were drunk at the time. Sergeant Larkin said the injured man had head, neck, and upper body injuries. His back was badly bruised and looked as it if had been whipped. He received three cuts to his head during the attack. He had been lured by the Monkey into a laneway near a restaurant where he worked and attacked with an iron bar. The three accused joined in the attack. People sleeping in nearby apartments were woken by the man's cries for help and only for their intervention, the sergeant said, his injuries might have been more serious. Gardai arrived quickly at the scene but the attackers had fled. Three of them were arrested a short time later outside a house nearby still carrying the iron bars, but the Monkey scaled a wall and fled. Mr Conor Fahy, BL, prosecuting said gardai had no problems with the Chinese community in Galway, who were known to be decent, law-abiding, hardworking people. Three barristers, who appeared for the three accused concurred that the Monkey was the ringleader who had given the other three a lot of drink earlier that night in his apartment before giving them the iron bars and threatening them to join in the attack. The court was told there was no question of organised crime or triads being involved. Judge Harvey Kenny said the assault was premediated and Mr Li was lucky his injuries were not life threatening. He sentenced Ning Qi to 12 months in prison, Zung Wang and Tao Liu to 18 months each, and said the warrants would not issue if the men all left Ireland before next Monday and returned to China. Zung Wang was sentenced to 18 months in prison, backdated to December 1 last, because he has been held in custody since that date and was told that if he left the country he would not have to serve the remainder of his sentence. Tao Liu, was sentenced to 18 months in prison, backdated to July 1, because he had been held in custody for three months prior to his trial and was given time also to leave Ireland.
