REALLY GOOD BORDEAUX FOR CHRISTMAS
by Willie Shaw ordeaux also known as Claret (particularly in the U.K.) dominated red wine sales until very recently. Although it is facing an ever increasing onslaught from all over the globe, the very best Bordeaux wines sell out each year at premium prices.

The most expensive wines, e.g. Petrus,Mouton Rothschild, Lafite etc are regarded as investments. In 1986 you could have bought a case of Petrus for 4,000 that case would now fetch close to 20,000. The serious and 'canny' collector aims to buy wine when released (En Premeur) store it, and later sell 50% of their stock for an amount equivalent to the original investment. The result, free drinking of the worlds best wines. However, let's come back to earth and talk about some really excellent Bordeaux at more affordable prices. The wines I mention below vary from 28.95 to 73.95 so they are not exactly an everyday purchase, but for Christmas if you like excellent Bordeaux or you want to buy a present for someone than this is the time to splash out. Good Bordeaux should always accompany food, broadly speaking it works best with red meat, and to a lesser extent game. The very best accompaniment is lamb, and prepared very simply - roasted with garlic and herbs. Needless to say the lamb should be of the very best quality you can find. Some people taste red Bordeaux and complain about the 'Tannin', however it performs a valuable role. It leaves the mouth clean and dry between mouthfuls and it is also an anti oxidant that helps to keep our arteries clear. TIP: Good Bordeaux improves over time in the bottle, however, there is a stage when it peaks and after that it declines. So if you are storing good wines it is always advisable to sample them regularly. Every top class Bordeaux has a theoretical 'Vintage Time chart' this is a graph which shows how over a certain length of time the particular wine is improving. It tells you when it reaches it's peak and when it will decline. So make sure you drink up well before the declining phase starts. Good Bordeaux, aids the digestion, calms the soul and stimulates conversation among friends.
