Suspended sentence for carpenter who had row with girlfriend
A lover's tiff landed a couple before Galway District Court this week where the male partner was given a suspended sentence. John Cullen, a native of Tullamore, Co Offaly, and Joan McCann, from Clonaslee, Co Laois, were staying at an apartment in Gleann na Ri, Dublin Road, Galway, when a row broke out on April 7 last. Both were intoxicated at the time. A security man became concerned for Cullen's safety when he saw him storm out and head in the direction of the railway at Lough Atalia and he phoned the Gardai. Garda Mark O'Sullivan said he went to Gleann na Ri where he met Ms McCann, who was drunk and he charged her with being drunk in public. He then went in search of Cullen and when he found him the accused became annoyed and began to argue with the garda. The accused was arrested before things got out of hand, Garda O'Sullivan told the court. Defence solicitor Tom O'Donoghue said the garda was only called when the security man became concerned for Cullen's safety and he had been taken into custody for his own good. He said Cullen was an apprentice electrician studying in Galway, while McCann was a third year student at Athlone RTC. Inspector Marie Skehill said Cullen had a previous conviction for a breach of the peace on another occasion. Judge David Anderson applied the Probation Act in McCann's case, but he sentenced Cullen to two months in prison for breaching the peace, suspended for two years on condition that he behave himself in the interim and he took the charge of being drunk in public into account.
