What would Zhanna Wilde make crowned of it all?
Dublin has a reputation of giving nicknames to its public monuments the moment they are erected, but it seems that Galway is every bit as quick when it comes to nicknames for public art. To mark Estonia's arrival into the EU, the Estonian government made a gift to the people of Galway of a statue of Irish writer Oscar Wilde and Estonian author Eduard Wilde, which was unveiled last Saturday. However, three days before the unveiling, people were already calling the pair `Laurel and Hardy'. It makes you wonder what would Oscar make of the wit who called him and new friend that? -- KA

Caption Corner
Lots and lots of entries to last week's Caption Corner pic of Posh and Becks on their way into a recent party. The entries included "You can stop squeezing now; David, is that pregnant woman there waving at you; Don't be daft love, our marriage is
"Smile if you want the diamond."
as secure as your record deal; Is that a mobile phone in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me: Princess, do you know where the Loos are...I really have to go; Can I have the GoldenBalls back now; and you wouldn't believe the crowds that were in Knock." However, the winner is Becks lovingly telling his wife, "smile if you want the diamond." which was sent in by Corina Cloonan. 243 Castle Park, Ballybane. Corina wins a 20 book voucher for Charlie Byrne's book shop. For this week's competition, can you tell us what has just been said by laugh-a-minute Foreign Minister Brian Cowen when he entertained China's Minister for Foreign Affairs Li Zhaoxing in Straffan last week. -- DV

Sex and the City may have run its course on television screens worldwide but for the ladies of St Bridgid's Ballybane parish committee, the spirit of the characters lives on! And, as part of their annual funding drive, this year's St Brigid's Parish fashion extravaganza -- previous years saw them run off the hugely successful clerical show and the political fashion show - is aptly titled `Fashion and the City' and will even feature a `Mr Big' competition sponsored by Hanley Menswear. Scheduled for the Corrib Great Southern Hotel on May 4, the show will feature models from the city-based
Catwalk Agency as well as a specially choreographed dance troupe from the Warren Doyle Project. With more than 20 city centre fashion shops providing an array of up to date clothing, fashions accessories, and specialists in manicures and nailcare, Laura at Nail Associates, stylist James of the Kostello Group, Nicola of Colour Me Beautiful will also join the line-up of what has proved to be the most popular show of its kind in the city social calendar. Tickets for the one-off spectacular are available from all participating fashion stores as well as from Maria on (091) 755470.
Meditate your stress away
Buddha reached enlightenment through meditation and spoke of its benefits. Now the city can experience those benefits too as a new meditation centre is offering free classes. The Chaitanya Meditation Centre, at 7 Market Street has just opened and is offering free meditation classes to help Galwegians soothe away stress, ill-health, and anxiety. It holds guided relaxation sessions and for those who want to go further, a series of three special meditation classes. In accordance with ancient tradition, no fees are charged. Oystering and roistering
It is hard to believe that in September 1954, only 34 people attended the first Clarenbridge Oyster Festival. This week's launch of the 2004 festival, which also happens to be the 50th anniversary of the event, will surely trigger people to book tickets early, which come September become like Golden Tickets for Willie Wonka's Choclate Factory. According to Padraig Greaney, festival chairperson, this year's 50th anniversary festival promises to be the best ever with a host of events planned including the traditional market day, gourmet culinary demonstrations, art exhibitions, yacht racing, etc. For the first time in the festival's long history all main weekend activities will take place within the festival marquee. The main Oyster Festival weekend (September 3 to 5) will start with the first tasting of the new season's oysters at the 50th anniversary opening party on Friday September 3. The celebrations continue on the Saturday with the day long 50th anniversary oyster gala celebration on the banks of the Claren River. The festival barbecue will take place on Saturday evening and to cater for demand this event will move to the festival marquee also. For those able to stick the pace there is the 50th anniversary festival jamboree on Sunday afternoon again in the festival marquee at Paddy Burkes. With a family focus, this marks the traditional closing of the festival. My advice is buy your tickets early this year. They can be purchased by phoning the ticket hotline at (0910 796766 or em a i l i n g clarenoystfest@esatclear.i e or logging onto www.clarenbridge.com
