Students drink too much and don't know how to behave, says judge
Third level students are drinking too much and don't know how to behave, Judge Mary Fahy observed at Galway District Court while dealing with one of a number of students who were before the court this week charged with public order offences. Damien Shanahan, 51 Glen Rua, Ballybane, came to the notice of Garda Ciara Moran on April 1 last at 2.25am in Supermac's, Eyre Square, when she intervened as he tried to headbutt a doorman who was escorting him from the fast-food restaurant. Garda Moran told the court Shanahan's friend was inside the premises where he had vomited a bag of chips he had just eaten into the faces of other customers. "With friends like that, who needs enemies?" Judge Fahy said. She went on to say that the amount of students coming before the court was amazing. "Are you learning anything at all about behaviour. You don't know how to behave. "There's too much drink involved," the judge said, before she convicted and fined Shanahan 200 for breaching the peace and 100 for being drunk in public.
