NUI, Galway talk on the links between maths and music
A public lecture due to take place in NUI, Galway this evening will examine physical aspects of music. In Good Vibrations: Mathematics, Mechanics, and Music, Prof Michael Carroll will look at the science behind music. Prof Carroll will use audio demonstrations to provide a better understanding of the mathematics of consonance -- more commonly known as musical scales -- perceptions of loudness and pitch, circularity, timbre, and reverberation. An NUI, Galway graduate, Prof Carroll is currently McMurtry professor of engineering at Rice University, and he holds a Walton fellowship at Science Foundation Ireland in NUI, Galway. The lecture will take place today at 5.30pm in room IT 125 in NUI, Galway.
