Knocknacarra finally to get a community centre
BY KERNAN ANDREWS The long, bitter, and often bizarre saga of an attempt to provide Knocknacarra with a community centre finally reached something of a satisfactory close this week. At Monday's city council meeting, the city manager John Tierney said that after numerous meetings with the Knocknacarra Community Centre Ltd and the Knocknacarra Action Group, he was in a position to propose the long awaited community centre for the area. The centre will be located in Rahoon at Millers Lane and will have a sports hall, four changing rooms, a reception/administration area, managers office, staff room, six meeting rooms, a gym, and a first-aid room. The planning report said the centre should be capable of catering for a childcare facility whether as a purpose built portion of the development or else part of the centre should be converted to meet this need. There will also be 52 car parking spaces. Cycle parking needs will be met at a later date. Mr Tierney complimented both the KCCL and KAG and said all were in a position to move forward. He said consultation will take place with sporting and other organisations on May 27 to advise them of the up-to-date position on the centre. He also proposed a further public meeting to elect a new committee for the centre. A report will then come back before the city council recommending "approval in principle" to give the site to the new committee. The council will then make a financial contribution to building the centre. Sen Margaret Cox praised Mr Tierney for his work and councillors supported the manager's motions for the centre.
