Oranmore man still over limit the morning after the night before
An apprentice plumber was convicted of drunken driving at Galway District Court this week after a breath sample showed he was still over the legal breath/alcohol limit as he drove to work the next morning. Oliver Mannion (25), from Renville West, Oranmore, pleaded guilty to the offence and to not having insurance or a driving licence when he was stopped by Garda Shane Igoe at 6.25 a.m. on October 27 last year. A breath sample showed a reading of 52 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 mls. of breath. Defence solicitor, Jennifer Carpenter said her client was now fully insured and had a driving licence. He had been out the night before and had just a few hours sleep before driving to work, she said. Judge Mary Fahy said the accused had acted very irresponsibly by driving after just a few hours sleep and with alcohol taken. She convicted and fined him 350 and disqualified him for twelve months on the drunken driving charge and imposed the same penalty and disqualification on him for not having insurance. A further 50 fine was imposed for not having a driving licence at the time. The judge agreed on the application of Ms Carpenter, to postpone the disqualification until July 1.
