Charity to benefit from world class garden
Y JULIE TIERNEY The Galway Mental Health Association will benefit from a garden open day at Lorna McMahon's garden Ardcarraig in Oranswell, Bushypark on Wednesday May 19. For the last 20 years this garden has been open to the public annually to raise funds for the Galway Mental Health Association, of which McMahon is a founding member. It will be open from 10am to 9pm on the open day and tea and coffee will be available. The plant sale, which always contains rare and unusual plants, is always a major attraction and this year it promises to be bigger than ever. Ard Carraig has been developed over the last 32 years. Initially it consisted of one acre and it now extends over 4.5 acres. It has a natural stream, eight pools, heather and bog area, Japanese style sections, as well as a sunken Mediterranean garden, and a formal herb area. During the last year a new house has been built in the centre of the woodland with views of Lough Corrib and sections of the garden. It has been skilfully sited and is surrounded by mature plants and trees. It has been designed to fit into the garden and is unobtrusive, giving the impression that it has been in situ for many years. The adjoining sections of the garden have been enlarged and redesigned to accommodate the plants which were moved and are well worth a look. Admission charge is 4. All are welcome.
