New support service for people with cancer
BY MARY O'CONNOR A nurse with a background in cancer care has set up a support service for people living with the condition. Bettie Delaney who lives in Taylor's Hill says she was prompted to do this by the growing number of people who are affected by cancer, a disease which strikes one in three. Her clinic in St Mary's Avenue caters for both sufferers and their families and friends. "Having worked as a tumour registration nurse with the National Cancer Registry for the past 10 years I am very conscious of the large number of people who are affected by cancer. In 2002 the number of new cancer cases nationally was 21,300 and the number of deaths was 7,826. I feel so strongly about these figures that I have given up my job in order to focus on providing a professional support service." She says her service will give people an opportunity to talk about the physical and emotional changes that can accompany cancer. She also offers bereavement support for those who has suffered a loss. Ms Delaney, who has also opened a new Reiki clinic, believes "journeying with cancer sufferers in a safe and caring way" can offer huge benefits as they cope with their diagnosis.
