Oyster festival one of the best in the world, says Sunday Times
BY SINEAD MCGOVERN The Galway International Oyster Festival, which will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2004, was given a special mention in the Sunday Times at the weekend. The festival, which attracts large crowds to the city every year, was the only event recommended in the west of Ireland, and one of only three in the whole country. In the Sunday paper events from all over the world were selected which were deemed suitable for weekend getaways. The article explained "From pottery in Pembrokeshire, to migration in Masia Mara, from Shakespeare in Stratford to dunes in Dubai, escape is only ever a Friday away." Neil McNeilis, PRO for the festival, was delighted with the mention; "Of the 52 getaways selected the Galway International Oyster Festival was one of only three selected for Ireland and the only one for the west. In 2000 the festival was also recommended by the Sunday Times as one of the 12 greatest shows on earth and led to large numbers of bookings from the UK." This September sees the 50th birthday of the Galway International Oyster Festival. In the past it has been written about by all of the major tourist guide publications around the world and has been filmed by Asian, North American, and European television crews. Originally started to extend the tourist season and promote the Galway native oysters, the festival has gone on to be worth more than 6 million to the local economy a year.
