Man convicted by jury of vicious city assault bailed
A 25-years-old man who was convicted by a jury in July, 2002, of inflicting serious injuries on another man in an unprovoked attack, was remanded on continuing bail at Galway Circuit Criminal Court this week. The same court heard evidence in October, 2002, that the victim was terrified to give evidence against the accused, Martin McDonagh of 182 Castle Park, Galway. McDonagh was convicted by the jury of assault, causing harm, at Ballybane in the early hours of May 6, 2001. The 33-year-old victim sustained two fractures to his face, a fracture to his eye socket, which was pushed back into his skull, a large cut to his head and severe bruising to the entire facial area. The case had been adjourned to October, 2002, for sentencing. On that date, Garda Cyril McDonagh gave evidence of how the victim had been intimidated and told to give certain evidence to the court. If he

did this, he would be paid a sum of money. He was terrified to come to court and did not wish to commit perjury, the detective had said. Garda McDonagh said the victim's wife was petrified for her own safety as she too had been approached. The family had moved house due to the intimidation. At the time, Judge Carroll Moran described it as a very serious offence, and pointed out that a substantial prison sentence hung over the accused. He agreed to have McDonagh attend an alcohol treatment course at Harristown House and adjourned sentencing to January last. A favourable probation report was handed into the court on that date and the matter was then adjourned to this week for sentencing to see

how McDonagh behaved in the meantime. A probation report on McDonagh's progress to date was not available to the court but McDonagh himself gave evidence, stating he had abstained from alcohol and was now attending a FAS course. He said he kept regular appointments with his probation officer and was attending group counselling sessions at Harristown Treatment Centre every month as part of an aftercare programme. Under cross examination by Galway West state solicitor, William Kennedy, McDonagh admitted he had been charged with drunken driving and dangerous driving last January but the matter had not been dealt with yet. Judge Moran remanded McDonagh on continuing bail to appear before the court again on January 12 next and he ordered an up-to-date probation report be prepared for that date.

Travel to Scotland in 75 minutes
BY JULIE TIERNEY A direct air route to Glasgow from Galway Airport will commence next month enabling passengers to fly to Scotland's largest city in just 75 minutes. The Air Wales service to Glasgow International will offer both business and leisure flyers a quick, easy, and cost-effective route to the Scottish city from the west of Ireland. It begins on December 8 and will initially operate five days a week. The new daily service will depart Galway at 13.45 to arrive in Glasgow at 15.00. The return flight will depart Glasgow at 12.00 to arrive in Galway at 13.45. Air Wales is the national Welsh airline, and has been operating since 1999. Based at Swansea airport, it currently operates from Dublin, Cork, Cardiff, Swansea, and Plymouth. This new route is a further step in Air Wales' route expansion plan, with an additional new route also launching shortly from Swansea to Amsterdam. Air Wales recently added a further 48 seat ATR 42 to its existing fleet of three aircraft providing additional capacity. According to Roy Thomas, chairman, Air Wales Galway--Glasgow is perceived to be a key route in the continued development of the airline. "The announcement of a direct service to Glasgow is an enormous boost to industry in the region, to both Galway and the west of Ireland," said Joe Higgins, chairman, Galway Airport. "There are strong traditional links between Scotland and the west of Ireland. It is now up to local business interests and the travelling public to support this route to ensure the service is retained and grown to additional daily flights." President of Galway Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chris Coughlan, also welcomed the new airlink and congratulated Galway Airport and Air Wales on their initiative and foresight. "The addition of this new route extends the inward and outward access to Galway and further establishes and consolidates Galway as being the gateway to and from the west of Ireland. The air linkage has a further importance as it represents a modern day extension of the traditional and historical connections between west of Ireland and Scotland." Reservations can be made online at www.airwales.com or by phoning 1800 654 193.
