Shaving graces
One in two men finds shaving a real pain in the neck. With 75 per cent of them suffering from sensitive skin and one in two complaining of morning "redneck" it's little wonder some opt for permanent five-o-clock shadows. Experts say the very act of shaving aggravates the skin. Combine this with the heat of blade friction and many men cook up a heady cocktail of skin horrors every morning. Now a new electric shaver - the world's first to automatically condition the skin while shaving claims to have put paid to all that misery. FreeGlider from Braun dispenses shaving conditioner continuously throughout the shave to reduce skin damage and irritation. The shaving conditioner works in two stages. The first one prepares the skin to reduce friction enabling the razor to glide over your skin while the second releases micro capsules onto the skin, providing a specially formulated mix of vitamin E and softening liposomes to leave the skin hydrated and healthy. FreeGlider is washable and rechargeable - a one hour charge delivers two to three weeks of cordless shaving. It costs 154.99 and is available at Roches Stores and independent electrical and pharmacy outlets.

Face facts Heaven scent
Perfume plays a vital almost indefinable role in our lives. Like the clothes we wear, it makes a statement about us. It can suggest confidence, femininity, a sensitive nature or romantic soul. It can also affect our mood and that of the people around us. Heavy perfumes tend to soothe the mind while fresh light ones stimulate, even revitalise. In the past, women tended to choose a particular perfume and remained loyal to it for years, if not life. That way they were associated with one scent. Today, thinking has changed and we tend to use different fragrances to correspond with our moods. Ideally, perfume should reflect these but of course your skin type and chemical make-up should be taken into consideration too when making your choice. If the idea of an exclusive fragrance appeals to you, you might like to avail of a new service being offered by an English company. Fragrance for you allows you to design your own personal perfume and they create it for you. Imagine having a perfume which reflects your personality, lifestyle and outlook on life? All you have to do is fill in a personality profile questionnaire which is available on the company's website at www.fragrancesforyou.com The company, using the details entered, then defines the user's personal scent. It also offers a gift voucher service for these exclusive perfumes or aftershaves. A 30ml bottle of this exclusive eau de toilette costs about 38 including post and packing. The product is personalised by labelling the bottle with the wearer's name. If you want to stand out in the crowd this winter, go for a feminine make-up look. That's the message from Lancome, the cosmetic company. Urban Eve, its colour collection for this season, concentrates on greys and reds. Hues of ink, mole, smoke or pearl grey contrast with radiant, shocking and totally transparent reds. The shades work well together and can be layered and blended in a flash, allowing an infinite multitude of combinations.

Making eyes
Aim for the catwalk look with a touch of frost. Lancome's Colour Focus Metashine (18) aims to create radiance leaving eyes adorned with silver

Getting lippy
Red is this season's musthave lip colour. Shine is big news too so comine both to make a show-stopping entrance. Juicy Rouge (18.50), a longwear wet look lipstick comes in two shades with a delicate fragrance of strawberry for lips that look sweet enough to eat. Star Gloss (17.50) adds intense glossiness and sparkle. Local Lancome stockists include Brown Thomas, Matt O'Flaherty's, Feeley's of Tuam and Flanagan's of Ballinasloe.

Coming to your senses
* When choosing a perfume, never try too many at any one time or you will confuse your sense of smell. * Don't choose a perfume because it smells right on a friend. Scent is affected by diet and lifestyle as well as skin type. * Once you've broken the seal of a bottle, the perfume begins to evaporate slowly which alters its balance. It deteriorates after about six months once you have opened the bottle. An unopened bottle will generally keep for about a year. * Never wear perfume while sunbathing. Essences can bring on a rash. * Don't splash perfume on your neck if you're wearing jewellery, especially pearls, because the alcohol could damage them. * Marilyn Monroe splashed pefume all over her body. You may need to be a bit more sparing so dab it on pulse points like the temples, nape of the neck, inside the wrists, in the crook of the elbow and behind the knees. You can also spray hidden areas of your clothes such as under the hem and collar.
