Homeless to be affected by Government cutbacks says Simon's annual report
BY KERNAN ANDREWS SERVICES TO the homeless will be adversely affected by cutbacks in Government expenditure the Galway Simon Community has warned in its annual report launched this week. Labour's Galway West TD Michael D Higgins launched the community report on Monday in its new administrative offices at 10 Montpellier Terrace, The Crescent. both statutory and voluntary, already agreed the need for additional services. Indications too are that the same constraints will apply in 2004. It also says that good

quality and responsive services cost money and an increasing level of services, and the rising cost of living means that services cannot be provided in 2004 at the same cost as in 2002.

God must be left in EU says Scallon
BY KERNAN ANDREWS CONNACHT-ULSTER MEP Dana Rosemary Scallon was among a number of MEPs who this week presented the EU with a petition calling for God to be mentioned in the union's constitution. The petition included almost 100,000 Irish signatures. Scallon thanked all those who signed the petition and she said it would now be impossible for the EU "to ignore this initiative from the people". Scallon said the reference to God is not an attempt to make the EU an exclusively Christian union, instead reference to Him is in order to base the EU on a "firm foundation" of sound ethical principles and values. "A reference to our Christian heritage or to God is not a threat to Europe," said Scallon. "However, I believe the exclusion of such a reference is a threat to the European Union."
