Bikes and birdwatching fundraiser for Malawi

Once again Christmas approaches and inevitably that means it's time to prepare for our Annual Christmas Art Competition. The principal aim of the competition is to find a glorious colour cover for the Christmas week edition of the Galway Advertiser and in so doing we know a great many people derive a lot of pleasure and satisfaction from entering.

Christmas Art Competition 2003
The theme for this year will be

Since last year funding from Galway went on a monthly basis to support five villages and a hospital in the Zomba area of drought-struck Malawi. This has been done through a local group called Zikomo which channels 100 per cent of all funds collected directly to the targets in Malawi. Since the people in this area of Malawi now have at least some harvest this year, funding has been organised for the provision of 100 water pumps, 10 of which were funded by Deirdre Newell and friends after she completed her Leaving Cert, and 26 pumps were funded by the Galway Advertiser. Now the Zikomo charity, with the help of Anne Hughes Rynne, one of the founders of Clane hospital, Co Kildare, will have funding to provide AIDS medication and

other needs. This Sunday Europa Cycles (opposite the Cathedral) has offered the use of bikes to raise some more funds through a birdwatching event which will be led by Wendy Martin. The trip may also include some mushroom identification. Those interested in taking part in the cycle should meet at Europa Cycles at 1:30pm this Sunday. It is advised to bring outdoor gear, a notebook, and binoculars if desired. Those who would prefer to go by car can get directions from Margaret 555502 or Claire 796522. The next fundraising event, the launch of a new young band at Galway Rowing Club, will take place on Saturday December 13.

Deportment courses this autumn
The Peggy Carty School of Deportment has launched a comprehensive autumn programme which gets under way this weekend. If you want to give your children confidence and coping skills for today's demands, and help them to grow up with ease, a personal development course with the school might just be the answer. Peggy Carty School of Deportment which was established in 1961 is known throughout Ireland for the success of its students in helping them make the best of their potential. The next seminar for boys and girls aged four to 12 years, and teenagers aged 12 to 16 years takes place for three weeks on Saturday November 22, Saturday December 6, and Sunday December 7. A weekend seminar for ladies entitled `Developing Style' will be held on November 28, 29, and 30, and Sunday December 7. Numbers are limited for these courses so early booking is advisable. For more information or for a brochure phone (091) 582000.

Christmas in the West of Ireland
We would like if paintings could reflect the West of Ireland in some way but they can also include the traditional Christmas story, the hopes and aspirations for world peace, a roof for the homeless, a shared vision of living in harmony between religious and ethnic groups, all of which are high on the priority list of young people here in the West of Ireland as they are all over the world. The choice is as wide as ever. Lots of prizes are being generously provided by Paddy Creavin, Cregal Art Ltd, Monivea Rd, Galway; and Kenny's Bookshop and Art Gallery. The overall winner, who will be selected from every age group will receive the main prize of 75 and the winning painting will be published on the front page of the special Christmas edition of the Galway Advertiser.

(3) Sellotape on the back of your entry the following details: Your name, address, age, and the name of your school, on a separate piece of paper. This is important as we receive so many entries names can get lost. (4) You may enter as many times as you like.
