With the season of over indulgence fast approaching, fitness and leisure centres are already making space for all the new members that they will doubtless have enrolling shortly after January 1. No one likes to harbour excess weight, and in the New Year we are all fresh with enthusiasm and full of resolutions to make gym visits part of our regular routine. It's not usually long however until the drive lapses and the couch becomes an attractive alternative to the treadmill. The desire to lose weight does not always overpower the tiredness experienced after a long day at work, and so in most cases the couch is the winner. What is missing is motivation. We all want to get rid of those few extra pounds, but we're not always keen enough to make the necessary sacrifices. Meet the Reape brothers. Together they make a unique partnership, and they could be just what you will need come January 1 when the Quality Street and Roses are just a distant memory. They are the only team of their kind in Galway, and perhaps even in Ireland.

So how does he help people change their mental image of themselves? "You're mind works in pictures not in words, so it's just a matter of giving people a positive mental image of themselves to work towards. If I place a mental image of them in their heads as a thin person, their mind can't tell the difference between reality and fiction and that image will act as a driving force for them when they are trying to lose weight,' he says. "It's really a matter of concentration of attention. At any one time, a person can be thinking of up to seven things at once. I get them to stop and to focus on one thing in particular, whether it is giving up smoking or becoming a size 10. "It's all about confidence building. We all know what it feels like to be confident. Suppose I am a confident football player and I'm taking up something like public speaking. I can take the confidence you feel while playing football and use it when I'm talking in public. It's all about using an anchor, like a song that reminds you of a good summer, or a smell that reminds you of someone you love. You can use something from situations when you are confident at times when you are not."

The Reape Technique
Declan (26) and John Paul (24) from Foxford in Mayo, started hatching their business plan about five years ago. Declan was studying hypnotherapy part-time in the Marino Institute of Education in Dublin, and John Paul was with Home Farm, a semi professional football team in Dublin. They both became very interested in the psychology of sport and fitness and went about figuring out a way to combine their separate fields of expertise in a way that would complement each. What they have come up with is a body and mind system that will help even the most sedentary of people fall in love with fitness.

instructor he will take you under his wing for an hour and a half to reveal to you the secret uses of dumbbells and the correct way to sit while using a rowing machine. "So many people join gyms in January but there is no sign of them in February, and there are very few gyms that will ring their clients to ask them why they are not coming in! A lot of it is down to confidence. A gym setting can be very intimidating and some people are afraid of looking stupid," he says.

After advising a client on eating habits, John Paul takes him or her for an hour and a half personal workout. With expert advice on how to use the machines, and a workout buddy, people are more likely to persevere he says; "It's easier for some people when they can see me there beside them doing everything as well. I am there with them working up a sweat and egging them on." Sometimes though, this isn't quite enough and although they may behave

themselves during the workout, the biscuit tin may lure them on arriving home. Cue Declan.
