BY MARY O'CONNOR WOULD YOU like to be the next Kim Basinger or Rachel Hunter? If you are aged between 14 and 21 years and believe you are model material, then this could be the opportunity of which you've always dreamed. Maybelline New York, the cosmetic company, in association with the international Ford Supermodel Agency, is organising nationwide selection heats in Galway, Cork, Limerick and Dublin next month. The Galway event will take place at the Clybaun Hotel on Saturday September 27 from 10am until 6pm. The winners from each heat will compete at the VIP grand final in November in Dublin. The overall winner will travel to the Dominican Republic to participate in the international final, A spoksperson for the organisers says the competition is a once in a lifetime opportunity. "We are asking girls do they have the face for the cover of Vogue magazine. This competition gives them the prospect of exhibiting their elegance and charm and possibly being the chosen one. Scouts will be looking for the perfect Irish beauty. The prize is a modelling contract worth $250,000."

Buy a raffle ticket a n d help Iraqi children
BY MARY O'CONNOR AN AD hoc local group which raises money for UNICEF's children's relief programmes in Iraq is appealing to people to support its latest fundraising venture. The organisation, which was formed in February following a public meeting organised by Galway Alliance Against War, is called MERCI (Medical Emergency Relief for the Children of Iraq. Volunteers are selling 3 raffle tickets for a Volkswagen polo downstairs at the Eyre Square Centre this week. They hope to raise 15,000 from the venture. The money will be used by UNICEF to buy medical supplies to combat disease among Iraqi children. "The situation there is now worse than before the war," explains Richard Kimball, a spokesperson for MERCI. "The water supply is poisoned and sanitation is a non event. Children and women of childbearing years are the most vulnerable." He says vital medicines can help children with conditions such as diarrohea and leukaemia. "As little as 45 cent will get a rehydration pack which can save a child's life." The draw for the Volkswagen car will take place on Monday at 3pm at the Eyre Square Centre. It will be followed by a brief talk by the director of UNICEF Ireland Maura Quinn.
