A D I A B E T I C had been suffering from dizzy spells following an incident at a Galway night-club during which he had too much to drink and became abusive to staff, Galway District Court heard this week. John O'Toole (30), from Ballyvaughan. Co Clare, had very little recollection of the events which took place at Boo Radley's night club, Forster Street, Galway, on May 9 last. He could offer no excuse for his behaviour on the night. Judge Garavan said O'Toole should not touch drink at all due to his medical condition and he warned him to be careful in future before fining him 200 for breaching the peace.

Ballinasloe man given chance to mend his ways
A BALLINASLOE man who was warned last week in the Circuit Criminal Court to address his alcohol addiction or face a prison term, after he pleaded guilty to burning down a neighbour's vacant house, appeared before Galway District Court this week on other charges. Michael Coogan, Shankill, Kilkerrin, Ballinasloe, was charged with breaking a window at Ceannt Station on March 16 last, with stealing two bottles of cider from Lidl on the Headford Road, Galway, on April 12, and three bottles of cider from Dunnes Stores, Eyre Square, Galway, on the same date. He was further charged with being drunk and a danger to himself and others at Williamsgate Sheet on April 11. A probation report on the accused was handed into the court this week. His solicitor, Adrian MacLynn, said Coogan had been accepted at Harristown House Treatment Centre, in Castlerea, to undertake a six-week course to combat his addiction to alcohol. MacLynn said his client had been given a chance to mend his ways when he appeared before die Circuit Court last week and be fully intended to avail of that chance. Judge John Garavan said it was now up to Coogan to rehabilitate himself and be adjourned the charges before the District Court to September IS. directing that an up-to-date probation report be made available on that date.

AN EASTERN European asylum seeker charged with rape is to apply to the Supreme Court later this week to have his bail money reduced. In the meantime, Judge John Garavan further remanded the 22-years-old married man in custody when he appeared before Galway District Court this week. The man is charged with raping a woman in a Galway city housing estate on Sunday June 29. He was taken into custody shortly after the alleged offence and has been held on remand ever since. Defence solicitor, Sean Acton, said the DPP had directed that the matter could be dealt with in the District Court if the accused pleaded guilty to the offences. Acton said his client was pleading guilty and he asked Judge John Garavan if he would accept jurisdiction to have the case dealt with in the District Court. Judge Garavan accepted jurisdiction and he adjourned the matter to September 15 for hearing in the District Court.

Michael Lydon, Kilroe East, Inverin, Galway, faces charges in the District Court of taking his father's car without his consent on March 30 last, driving it dangerously at two separate locations around Inverin, and having no insurance to drive the car on that date. Lydon is expected to stand trial in the Circuit Criminal Court later this year on charges of committing arson to hay sheds in the Inverin area, assaulting his sister causing her harm while being in possession of a knife, and with further charges of theft and breaching the peace, all on various dates last year. Defending solicitor Valerie Corcoran, applied for an adjournment of the charges before the District Court this week and she said her client was consenting to a further remand in custody. Judge John Garavan remanded Lydon in custody to appear before the District Court again on August 26.
