people seeking asylum
THE THREE Irish Tenors are embarking on a series of shows in aid of a new charity, which offers help to those genuinely looking for political asylum in Ireland. As part of the tour they play Galway's Town Hall Theatre on July 6. Part of the revenue from the shows will go to help fund the recently launched charity organisation The Irish Foundation of Torture Survivors, a group that offers aid to people who have suffered at the hands of violent and extremist regimes across the globe and who come to Ireland looking to escape. It is not the first time that Ciaran Nagle, Tony Norton, and Paul Byrom have contributed to a just cause. Last summer they donated profits from their summer shows to the Special Olympics. They have also supported the dedicated work of the ISPCC. the Wheelchair Association, and the Carers Association. The Three Irish Tenors promise a concert of superb music and song, with a wide range of Irish classics and light opera, many of which feature on their debut album Atlantic Shore, released last year. The trio have digitally remastered this album and added a new track 'September Said Goodbye To All The Roses'.

The tenors' musical chemistry has weaved its magic across America, while also performing alongside the original Three Tenors - Carreras, Domingo, and Pavarotti as well as John Sutherland and Alfredo Kraus, they have also shared the stage with American pop legend Neil Diamond when he performed in Ireland last summer. Radiohead -

Hail To The Thief (EMI)
THERE WAS a time when a young hand from Oxford put together some highly catchy tunes like 'Creep*. ' K a r m a Police', ' F a k e Plastic Trees' and many others on albums such as The Bends and OA' Computer. Everybody loved these albums a n d it seemed that this band would conquer the world. Then they went on their own tangent and produced two albums very unlike their previous work. Many hoped that this time around Radiohead would return to the days when their tunes were radio friendly. With Hail To The Thief traditionalists will be disappointed. It was thrust on to the record shelves with the lead track "There. There' as the formula followed the last few years seemed to continue. One cannot listen to this album without thinking of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. While this album is not as advanced sonically there are definite parallels. On "Sail To The Moon* you can see a clear influence by a song like 'Great Gig In The Sky' from Floyd's masterpiece. Perhaps the most radio friendly of this host of Radiohead tunes is an acoustic-based number called 'Go To Sleep'. Each song has that otherworldly quality that Dave Gilmour. Roger Waters, and the others achieved a generation before. 'There There' has definite parallels with a song like 'Breathe'. Fans of Radiohead's previous album Amnesiac will see Hail To The Thief as a progression. It is almost there but they must get rid of that at times very whiney vocal quality by Thorn York. Perhaps a female vocalist would suit some of the tunes on this album as was achieved by Floyd with Clare Torry all those year ago in Abbey Road studios. While I can understand the direction that Radiohead are going in it seems that they will have to get a fuller sound to achieve a status alongside such names as Floyd and Jefferson Airplane The Radiohead following will continue to support, but for how long when they k>ng for a return to something like their earlier work. 8 out of 10 Albums supplied by , and are available at all branches of, Zhivago

THE ATMOSPHERIC, folk-infused spirit pop of New York based Irish singer-songwriter Mairead will be heard in Galway on July 7, when she plays support to Bruce Mathiske. Mairead re-located to New York in 1995 and formed Too Cynical To Cry, which achieved some success in the US and Europe. In late 1999, she disband the group and began her solo career, which led to Open The Door, her debut solo recording, co-produced by the artist, and proving a significant leap in her songcraft, musical ability and artistic depth. Throughout Open The Door the evolution of her spiritual voice finds regular expression, establishing Mairead as an artist of true integrity and vision. The songs mix redemptive themes ('Saviour', 'Face Another Day') with quieter, more sensual sounds, evident on the title track and on the album closer 'Grace' and 'Atonement*. The New York Daily News said of Mairc.ul she "combines elements of jazz, American soul. British pop and Celtic roots [to be] the latest pioneer of this pop form."
