Biggest fleet sets sail next week
BY LINLEY MACKENZIE

Galway yacht N i m m o , skippered by John Killeen, will headline a fleet of 70 boats next week c o m p e t i n g in t h e biggest sailing competition to be held on Galway Bay. The Galway Bay Cruiser Championship 2003 starts on Wednesday for five days, and Killeen's Nimmo will be seeking to reproduce the form that saw it take first place in the Class O on IRC handicap at the recent Sovereign's Cup Regatta in Kinsale. It is the first time a Galway boat has won Class 0 of such a prestigious event.

Racing against 18 boats in class, Killeen's Dubois 37 finished a clear winner over the four day, eight race regatta. Nimmo was one of five Galway boats taking part in the Kinsale event, and next week it will face stiff competition from club rivals, Eamon Conneely's Ibaraki, Niall Quinn's Finnesse, Martin Breen's Reconnaissance, and Jim Grealish's Now What, in addition to boats from the entire west coast of Ireland. Next week's event combines the racing fleets from both the West of Ireland Offshore Racing Association and the

Northwest of Ireland Offshore Racing Association. In addition the regatta will also boast the J / 2 4 fleet Western Championship - the first time all three fleets and events have joined together for one major competition. Hosted by the Galway Bay Sailing Club, the championships will feature racing over Olympic courses in Galway Bay, within full view of Salthill Promenade. Commodore Aine Nolan says she hopes to put this cruiser championship, spon sored by Dubarry and Portwest, on the calendar of all sailing enthusiasts through

New-look Celtic League presents new challenges for Connacht
BY LINLEY MACKENZIE Connacht face their toughest season since the start of the professional game with an extended Celtic League that begins in September and continues through until May. The changes in the Celtic League sees Connacht playing 22 games home and away, start ing on September 5/6 against Edinburgh, and finishing nine months later against.Welsh side Bridgend/Pontypridd. In addition the 12 teams will contrest a Celtic Cup with Connacht drawn in the first round against the Scottish Borders. Without doubt it is the longest season for the Connacht players in the new professional era. and it will certainly present challenges to the province's playing resources. With Connacht also ccmpeting in their Parker Pen European campaign, players are unlikely to be available to their club sides. This will hit both Galwegians and Buccaneers hard - both of which were hit by the loss of several Connacht players last season. The changes to the league format, which was previously divided into pools, has been made to ensure the top players in the three Celtic nations are only competing in the "most meaning ful" matches, according to the tournament's director Keith Grainger. Connacht, who reached the knock-out stages in the last two seasons, will face some now opponents this year. They kick off the league against European Cup side Edinburgh for the first time, and will also meet the likes of Gwent. Llanelli and the newly formed Neath/Swansea, Bridgend/Pontypridd and Cardiff Blues who are the result of recent merg ers in Welsh rugby.
