Don't forget your roots, Minister, Greens tell Brennan
BY KERN AN ANDREWS WHAT DUBLIN needs is not always what Galway needs according to the Galway Green party which claims that Transport Minister Seamus Brennan is confusing Dublin transport policy with National transport policy. Green Party spokesperson in Galway Niall 6 Brolchain has criticised the minister saying he is not concentrating enough on traffic and transport problems outside Dublin, citing his recent approval of a metro system in Dublin that will cost at least 10 billion. 6 Brolchain said Galway city needs a single quality bus corridor across Galway city, a commuter rail service to outlying towns on existing track, and a bypass of the town of Loughrea, which he feels will cost only a small fraction of the billions to be spent in Dublin. "What we are getting is an expansion of a mile of road from two lanes to four with no provision for a quality bus corridor," said 6 Brolchain, "the running down of the existing rail infrastructure with no heed being paid to the findings of the National Spatial Strategy or the Galway City Development Plan and the possibility of toll charges on the main Dublin to Galway route instead of a bypass for the worst bottleneck on the route." 6 Brolchain said he has nothing against a new metro system for Dublin. His objection is to billions of euros being spent on transport solutions for Dublin while cities such as Galway, are 6 Brolchain claims, "treated with contempt by a Galway bom minister who has clearly forgotten about his roots".
