Irish Sopranos make Saw Doctors to play Campbells Tavern debut Galway appearance
B E F O R E T H E Y head out on a four week tour of the U S A next month, T u a m ' s finest. T h e S a w D o c t o r s will p l a y t w o s h o w s in C a m p b e l l s T a v e r n , Cloughanover, Headford, on Tuesday January 28 and Wednesday 29. T h e C l o u g h a n o v e r s h o w s will feature The D o e ' s new bass player, Anthony T h i s t l e t h w a i t e , a founder m e m b e r of the W a t e r b o y s , n o w l i v i n g in S a l t h i l l . H e also plays a mean saxophone. T h i s t l e t h w a i t e . w h o h a s w o r k e d with the D o c s previously, r e p l a c e s long time band m e m b e r . P e a r s e D o h e r t y , w h o retired from the b a n d on J a n u a r y years as bassist and singer. P a y i n g tribute to D o h e r t y ' s years o f service, Leo Moran said: "Pearse's c o n t r i b u t i o n w i l l be s o r e l y m i s s e d b y ourselves and by our faithful f o l l o w e r s . Get Lynched at The Town Hall
ONE O F t h e most notorious incidents i n G a l w a y city, M a y o r J a m e s L y n c h ' s h a n g i n g of h i s own son, i s now the subject o f musical, Lynched, to be premiered in G a l w a y on T u e s d a y J a n u a r y 2 8 in t h e T o w n Hall T h e a t r e . O f t h e 14 t r i b e s o f Galway, the Lynch clan are probably the best k n o w n , w i t h 8 4 m e m b e r s having served as mayors of the city over a period of 170 years. However one mayor i s r e m e m b e r e d a b o v e all others. It's part o f G a l w a y folklore that in 1493, The Mayor of Galway, and chief magistrate of the city, James Lynch FitzStephen hanged h i s o w n s o n for murder. Many b e l i e v e the hanging t o o k p l a c e at the ' L y n c h w i n d o w ' at the rear o f St N i c h o l a s ' . H o w e v e r the location (and the w i n d o w ) may be more l e g e n d than f a c t . A c c o r d i n g to Jim Higgins, the heritage officer Cromwell shot his mother". W h o n e e d s facts w h e n the fiction is that good? Still, the story of a m a y o r hanging his own son i s c o m p e l l i n g , disturbing, and the stuff that inspires writers t o t a l e s of g u i l t , b e t r a y a l , murder, and loyalty. The story has now inspired a m u s i c a l . Lynched, written by M a g s Heffernan and composer Carl Hession. C u r t a i n C a l l T h e a t r e C o is b r i n g i n g the s h o w to the Town Hall from T u e s d a y J a n u a r y 28 to S a t u r d a y F e b r u a r y 1. Lynched i s directed by Vivian Coates and stars John Tuohy as Mayor Lynch, Maeve Lee, as his wife Catherine, Dave Langan as their son Walter, M i r i a m P e t i t as W a l t e r ' s girlfriend Agnes. Tommy Tiernan to get Ballinasloe laughing
B A L L I N A S L O E IS going to s t a r t 2003 on a high when c o m e d i a n T o m m y T i e r n a n plays the Ballinasloe Town Hall next Wednesday. T i e r n a n is o n e of the best t h i n g s to hit Irish c o m e d y in years. His m a n i c , intense delivery combines physical exuberance with a verbal eloquence and unique take on the absurdities of life. T o m m y ' s observational skill turn even the most m u n d a n e events into m o m e n t s of the g r e a t e s t h i l a r i t y : " A d o l e s c e n c e is l i k e Waiting For Godot with a c n e , " h e told an audience at G a l w a y ' s C o m e d y C l u b before Christmas. " W e ' v e a very indulgent attitude towards Satan - what other country would call him 'the divil'." Above all, his c o m e d y is top entertainment that is also a profound o b s e r v a t i o n o n the h u m a n c o n d i t i o n a n d character. As well as being a s t a n d - u p c o m i c T o m m y is also a prolific writer, the strength of w h i c h r e s u l t e d in h i s s i g n i n g a m a j o r publishing contract with Headline B o o k s for his debut novel, which will be published by Review. He is also an actor, and his credits i n c l u d e t h e feature film About Adam, the lead role in Channel 4's Small Potatoes, and the lead part in Fantasies - part of the drama s e r i e s for C h a n n e l 4.
