Galway cyclists lodge complaint over 7UP advertising campaign
BY KERN AN ANDREWS GALWAY CYCLISTS have lodged a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority over a poster for 7UP, which they say endorses footpath cycling. According to the Galway Cycle Campaign, the new 7UP advertisement shows a cartoon of a cyclist with a six-word caption: "Avoid road rage. Use the footpath". However, the cycle campaigners point out that cycling on footpaths is illegal and can be dangerous. They say cycling on the footpath is a hazard to pedestrians and to cyclists, who are liable to injury by cars turning and crossing at every junction, including driveways. "Normally we'd love to have advertising agencies using cyclists, or images of cycling, to sell their products," said GCC spokesman Shane Foran. "We do realise the poster is meant to be a light-hearted poke at the stresses of modern urban life, but if you cycle on footpaths at normal Irish cycling speeds, then you are extremely liable to injury." In their complaint to the ASA, the cyclists have provided data from international studies showing that cycling on footpath-type structures can result in up to 10 or 12 fold increases in the risk of junction collisions, which already account for three quarters of all car/bicycle collisions.
