Rahoon man on murder charge remanded on bail
A 52-years-old m a n charged with the m u r d e r of a n o t h e r m a n in Galway city last May, was further r e m a n d e d on bail at Galway District C o u r t this week. M i c h a e l R e i l l y , 75 C o r r a c h B h u i , R a h o o n , Galway, is charged with the murder of Patrick Shaughnessy (28), late of Coogan Park, Galway, at 75 Corrach Bhui, on May 25 2002. Inspector Sean Healy said the book of e v i d e n c e had j u s t been served on the accused. Defending solicitor, Sean O'Carroll asked for a short adjournment so that he could read the book. J u d g e J o h n G a r a v a n a g r e e d and remanded Reilly on continuing bail to a p p e a r b e f o r e the c o u r t a g a i n n e x t Monday.
Insurance confusion leads to fine for Shantalla m a n

A misunderstanding with his new insurance broker landed a motorist who was rear ended by another car in trouble when it was discovered he was driving without insurance. Bob Hannon, 7 New Avenue Wood, Shantalla, Galway, had four passengers in his car when it was rear ended by another car on August 27 last at Rahoon Road, Galway. The driver of the other car ran away and abandoned his car at the scene. Garda Pat Burke told Galway District Court the accused admitted not having insurance. Two passengers in Hannon's car had suffered from shock as a result of the collision, he said. Defending solicitor, Adrian MacLynn said his client had thought he was insured to drive at the time but there had been a mix-up when he changed insurance brokers. There had been a delay in the original broker sending on proof of his no claims bonus to his new broker and then the new broker claimed he never received it, and as a result he was not insured to drive at the time. Judge John Garavan fined Hannon 200 and said the one-year disqualification was not to apply under the circumstances.
Tirellan mother gets jail for knife charge
A 29-years-old mother of three was sentenced to three months in prison at Galway District Court this week a f t e r she p l e a d e d guilty to h a v i n g a knife in her possession outside a city centre p u b . Marie Ryan, 322 Tirellan Heights, Galway, also pleaded guilty to assaulting Garda Nicholas Delaney when he went to arrest her and to a breach of the peace on the same date. Garda Delaney said bouncers outside Fox's B a r , in E y r e S q u a r e , a l e r t e d h i m to t h e fact that the accused had a knife in her p o s s e s s i o n on the night of February 26 last year. As he approached her she threw the knife from her. She was very drunk and he decided to arrest her for her o w n safety, but she spat at him twice a n d k i c k e d h i m in t h e legs. She later apologised for her behaviour when she sobered up. Inspector Sean Healy said Ryan was further charged with assaulting three bouncers outside the Cellar Pub, Eglinton Street, Galway, on June 29 last. S h e w a s very d r u n k a n d a b u s i v e to o t h e r customers in the pub and w a s e j e c t e d by t h e bouncers. She assaulted them outside on the street a n d w a s a r r e s t e d for being drunk in public and a breach of the peace. T h e c o u r t h e a r d the a c c u s e d is c u r r e n t l y serving a six-months sentence handed down at Castlebar District Court five weeks ago for other offences and is due for r e l e a s e at the end of February. D e f e n d i n g solicitor, Valerie Corcoran asked J u d g e John Garavan to be as lenient as possible with her client. She said Ryan was very eager to receive the continued support and help offered b y p r o b a t i o n officer, Mary Halpin, in the past a n d she w a s a t t e n d i n g A A m e e t i n g s w h i l e in prison. Judge John Garavan said he had the utmost sympathy for Ryan who had a tough life but he had to do his duty. H e s e n t e n c e d her to three months in prison, to run consecutively to her p r e s e n t s e n t e n c e for h a v i n g the knife in his possession and imposed concurrent sentences on the other charges. He ordered the accused to enter into a probation b o n d for two years and obey all directions of the Probation Service for that time on her release from prison.
Inverin m a n on arson, larceny, and assault charges remanded in custody
A 20-years-old Inverin m a n , charged with three arson a t t a c k s , a n u m b e r of larcenies and one assault, was further r e m a n d e d in custody for one week when he appeared before Galway District Court this week. Michael Lydon, from Kilroe East, Inverin, is charged with setting fire to a disused house and a livestock shed at Kilroe East on December 16; with setting fire to another shed, which contained 300 bales of hay, worth 1,000, at Coillrua, Inverin, on September 29 last; with assaulting Kathy Lydon, causing her harm, on August 19; with producing a bread knife in the course of assaulting her; with entering as a trespasser Tt Chualain at Inverin. on November 25, and stealing 40 cans of Budweiser. In court yesterday, Lydon was further charged with stealing a 300 mobile phone from a man at Kilroe East, I n v e r i n , on D e c e m b e r 3 ; w i t h b r e a k i n g into S c o i l Salerno, Inverin, on October 10, and stealing office supplies and 10 cash; with stealing a mobile phone worth 300 from a woman in Kilroe East, on December 3; with having a sharply pointed knife in his possession at Tra Mhor, Inverin, on September 5, and with a breach of the peace on the same date. Inspector Sean Healy said the DPP had directed that the matter be sent forward to the Circuit Criminal Court and he applied to the court to have the accused remanded in custody for the preparation of a book of evidence. Defending solicitor, Valerie Corcoran said her client had been in custody since December 18 and she asked that the preparation of the book be expedited. Judge John Garavan remanded Lydon in custody for one week and he will appear before the court again on Monday next. February 3.
Asyli lum seeker went on city spending spree with lost card
A Nigerian asylum seeker went on a two-day spending spree with someone else's laser c a r d a n d stole 3 , 8 0 8 w o r t h of c l o t h i n g , j e w e l l e r y , electrical goods and mobile phones, from v a r i o u s s h o p s a r o u n d G a l w a y city. Suilaimon Morounfulu, 69 Seacrest, Knocknacarra, Galway, pleaded guilty to 30 charges involving the handling of various goods, knowing or believing they were stolen. The offences occurred on May 8 and May 9 last year, after his partner found a Laser card which had been lost by a third party. The accused lost no time crisscrossing the city over two days, buying goods at various outlets, including clothes, sportswear, jewellery, mobile phone, and even small grocery shops. Items taken included two DVD players, two mobile phones, a variety of fashion and sportswear clothing, a number of watches, drink, petrol, and groceries. Inspector Sean Healy told Galway District Court that j u s t over 2 , 1 0 0 of g o o d s had been recovered and restored to the rightful owners, but that 1,700 Worth of clothing and electrical goods had been used and could not be offered for re-sale. Defending solicitor, Adrian MacLynn asked for a probation report on his client and Judge John Garavan remanded the accused on continuing bail to March 10, for the preparation of such a report.
Man who was given 9,000 insurance quote convicted of motoring offence
A 22-years-oId motorist w h o c l a i m e d he w a s given a quote of 8 , 7 8 0 for i n s u r a n c e cover by one insurance company, was convicted of driving without insurance at Galway District C o u r t this week. William Canavan, 42 Glenburren Park, Ballybane, was followed from o n e part of the h o u s i n g e s t a t e to h i s home by Garda Michael Lally on September 18 last, w h e n the offence was detected. T h e c o u r t h e a r d in mitigation that the a c c u s e d , an a p p r e n t i c e p a i n t e r , had tried to obtain i n s u r a n c e cover but simply couldn't afford it after he was quoted the a b o v e a m o u n t by one insurance company. J u d g e John G a r a v a n said C a n a v a n s h o u l d s i m p l y not have been driving without insurance. He fined him 2 5 0 , and d i s q u a l i f i e d him from driving for one year.
