B u y a light a n d remember a friend
BY MARY O'CONNOR PEOPLE WHO would like to remember living or deceased family or friends this Christmas can do so in a special way by buying a light for five euro on the Christmas tree at University College Hospital. This fundraising initiative, which is in its fifth year, is the brainchild of the facility's Children's Remembrance Day Committee. Padraig O ' Ceidigh, the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year, will officially switch on the lights on the tree at 4pm on Sunday December 8. There will be music and carol singing prior to this. The Christmas tree is a focal point at the hospital during the festive season, say the organisers. "Lights can be sponsored for the living and the dead and can be given as a gift to friends and relatives at home and abroad," explains Susan Massey, the PRO of the committee. She says the tree reinforces the Christmas spirit and means a lot to patients and staff. Galway footballer, Kevin Walsh, who switched on the lights last year, says each light has a special significance. "It means so much to the people who sponsor it. You can light one for someone who is sick or deceased, it's a way of praying and remembering them." The Killanin star says passers-by may think it is just an ordinary tree but it is not. "A lot of people admire it but are not aware that it really is a remembrance tree. People who buy the lights have all something in common, they may be mourning a loss or remembering someone close to them. Buying a light is a chance to celebrate someone's life. The tree brings families together and it helps them get through Christmas which can be a difficult time for some. It focuses the public's thoughts of the spiritual dimension of Christmas too." The Children's Remembrance Day Committee has organised a number of events at UCHG in the past few years designed to reach out to the bereaved who have experienced stillbirths, the death of their children in hospital or at home. These events include the dedication of the Chapel of Remembrance, the setting up of a Garden and Book of Remembrance as well as the Christmas tree. To buy a light on the tree, contact Margaret Duignan at (091) 523206 or Susan Massey at (091) 771134 or Anne McKeown at (091) 544823.

Funding needed for city Christmas lights
BY KERNAN ANDREWS THIS WEEK Galway city's Christmas lights were officially switched on but it was revealed t h a t it costs a lot of money making the city look festively bright. At Monday's city council meeting, council approved a request from The Heart of Galway for funding of 10,000 to meet the increasing costs of the lights. This year The Heart of Galway has bought extra lights, garlands, and bows to decorate the city streets. According to Cllr Declan McDonnell, the storage, electricity, insurance and spending has cost the organisation between 55-60,000. As such there was a need to ask for funding. The city manager John Tierney said: "It's been a wonderful project in terms of the colour it has added to the city."
