Christy Moore Live At Vicar Street
(Sony)
JUST WHEN we thought Christy Moore gigs were a CHRISTY thing of the past, he MOORE suprised everyone by returning to the stage, and his new album Live at Vicar Street finds the man feeling good again. Recorded in February with D u n . i l Lunny and Declan Sinnott. the album covers Christy's staple themes of love, humour, hurt, people, and politics. Between his enthusiasm and the crowd's appreciative responses. captures what it was like to be at those gigs. The performances are marked by strong, yet deft touches, such as on Bobby Sands* song about poitin making. 'Mclllhatton'. while Christy's trademark percussive guitar sound drives John Spillane's 'Johnny Don't Go'. Christy's gigs have always been marked by irreverent humour and on crowd-pleaser 'Lisdoonvama' it's in full flow: "Oliver J Flanagan he used lo go swimming b*****lt naked in the Holy See." Christy has always been a great inierpreter of Shane McGowan's songs and his handling of ' A Pair Of Brown Eyes', maybe its finest ever reading, reveals a pain and insecurity in its central character only hinled al before. can hold its head up alongside Moore's other great in-concert documents and The capturing the formers intimacy and the 'alters energy.

couple learned from Maria Curran from An Spideal. The video will be shown in January.

To listen to her sing sean-nos is a pleasure. Her renditions of 'Una Bhan' and "Amhran an Phiica' are marked by a vocal clarity that is both haunting and This is also apparent when backed by musicians, such as the title track, which opens with some beautiful irad guitar picking by Pat Hargan. Throughout Ni Chonaola keeps the music minimal to let her voice lake centre stage. Brother MacDara takes the lead vocals on the cheeky 'Bimse Fein There are a couple of weird, but intriguing tracks. Ni Chonaola recites a poem over a mysterious guitar melody and ihc sound of waves on 'Oilcan na Teiscinne'. while an impressionistic vocal melody hovers over the chimes and accordion playing of closing track 'Ccol na Gaoithe'. An Raicin Alainn has that same spirit found on folk/trad
