Men broke clamp on parked car in city
Three Derry men broke a clamp they found on a parked, unoccupied Donegal registered car while on a drinking binge in Galway, the local court heard this week. Cormac McGready, his brother Ronan and their friend, Kevin McLoughlin, were very drunk when they caused 3 6 0 worth of damage to the wheel clamp, the property of Clampers Ltd., at Dock Street. Galway, on August 18 last. Inspector Pat Lehane said that when gardai arrived on the scene the clamp had been damaged. He said gardai were trying to establish from gardai in Donegal if the car in question had been taken unlawfully there and this may have accounted for the three men trying to take the clamp off. The three accused said they were very drunk and were only trying to help out the owner of the car because it had a Donegal registration. They denied they were trying to steal the car or had stolen it in Donegal. Mrs McGready, mother of two of the accused, travelled from Deny on the day of the court with 360 compensation. She said her sons and their friend were normally well behaved but she agreed with Judge Michael Connellan that they had been "three stupid fools" on this occasion. The Judge said he would have sent all three to prison but for the intervention of Mrs McGready who undertook to take them back to Derry with her. "Your mother has saved your bacon", the judge said before giving each of them the benefit of the Probation Act because it was their first offence, compensation had been paid, and they had pleaded guilty.

Abbeyknockmoy man charged with threatening to kill other man
A 21-year-old Abbeyknockmoy man was f u r t h e r r e m a n d e d in custody when he appeared before the holiday sittings of Galway District Court this week. Adrian Walsh, Abbeyknockmoy, Tuam, Co Galway, is charged with threatening to kill Dimitri Simbaev, at 5 Rathylin Glebe, Ballybane, on April 20 last. He is further charged with producing a knife in the course of a dispute on the same occasion. Inspector Pat Lehane said that a book of evidence in the matter had been served before the court sitting, and he asked for an adjournment for one week. Judge Michael Connellan then remanded the accused in custody to appear before the court again on August 27 next.

Youth remanded Islander on city burglary found drunk charges
A 17-years-old youth who admitted being involved in 16 burglaries around the city in which 5,000 worth of property was taken, was further remanded in custody when he appeared before Galway District Court this week. A further charge of dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm to another was withdrawn and replaced with a lesser charge of dangerous driving at Newcastle Road, Galway, on January 12 last. The youth is currently serving an 11-month sentence for other offences. He is now charged for his part in a series of break-ins and burglaries around the city which took place over a five-month period earlier this year. Detective Mick Moran told an earlier court hearing in July that none of the property or money stolen has been recovered. A small hammer, used on buses to break the glass in an emergency, was found on the youth when he was arrested. He would have used the hammer to break windows when gaining entry to houses, the court was told. Judge Michael Conncllan further remanded the youth in custody to St Patrick's institution to appear before the court again on September 9 next.

Headford man extradited and remanded in custody
A Headford man who has been extradited from England was remanded in custody when he appeared before Galway District Court this week. Trevor Quinn, 43 Crestwood, Headford, Co Galway, is charged with having a quantity of Ecstasy tablets in his possession at Eglinton Street, Galway, on May 31, 2000. He is further charged with having the drug in his possession for sale or supply to another on the same date. Inspector Pat Lehane told the court Quinn had been extradited recently and had been remanded from Dublin District Court to appear before the court in Galway. Judge Michael Connellan remanded Quinn in custody to appear before the court again next week, August 27.

Solicitor produced submission to claim charge sheets in asylum case were flawed
An asylum seeker was further remanded in custody when he a p p e a r e d before t h e holiday sittings of Galway District Court this week. Andrew Jasik, 59 Fearan Ri, Doughiska, Galway, is charged with failing to produce a registration certificate, a valid passport or documents establishing his identity and nationality, when requested by Gardai in early July following the nationwide crackdown on suspected illegal aliens. His wife Elisbieta faces similar charges. Mr Jasik has been remanded in custody while his wife was granted bail in July. In court this week, defending solicitor, Adrian MacLynn handed in a bound copy of his submissions in the case against his client. At the previous week's eourt sitting, Mr MacLynn said the charge sheets against his client were fatally flawed in that they omitted to cite Section 2 of the 1999 Emigration Act. He produced his submissions on the case this week and included case law, which he said would uphold those submissions. Judge Michael Connellan said he needed time to read the submissions and examine the case law. He remanded Jasik in custody for one week to appear before the court again on August 27 next.

in city street

A drunken 66-years-old Aran Islander was found lying in a doorway unable to stand up or speak, Galway District Court heard this week. Rory O'Donoghue, a native of Inis Oirr, only comes to Galway to drink occasionally because he cannot get drink on the island, arresting Garda John Feeney said. Garda Feeney gave evidence that he found O'Donoghue lying in a doorway at Williamsgate Street, at 8 pm last Thursday evening. He was so drunk he could not speak. He was unable to stand up and was arrested for his own safety by Garda Feeney. Inspector Pat Lehane said O'Donoghue had previous convictions for similar offences and had been fined for two such offences as recently as July. Garda Feeney said the accused cannot get drink on Inis Oirr and comes to Galway every three to four months, when he has enough money saved up for drink. Judge Michael Connellan fined him 125 for being drunk and a danger to himself and others on this occasion.
