Dana calls for housing plan
INDEPENDENT DAIL candidate for Galway West, Dana Rosemary Scallon, has proposed fast-tracking development and extra resources for local authorities to alleviate the housing crisis. "It's time to remove the waiting, the unaffordable debt and the sheer uncertainty about housing," said Scallon. Strategic Development Zones would fast-track the development of land for a range of uses by grouping them in one planning application, she said, while additional personnel for local authorities could implement the planning and development act more quickly. According to Scallon, this would accelerate the creation of large, fully serviced and properly planned housing, commercial and leisure developments, and clear the backlog for housing development. "It would curtail speculative development by positively focusing attention on specific areas identified as most suitable for serviced housing. It is time to have a strategic housing plan which puts the needs of families and the community first," said Scallon.

Vote wisely if you want better health care says Higgins
BY KERNAN ANDREWS THE OUTCOME of Friday's election will determine Ireland's health service for the next five years. Labour's Galway West TD Michael D Higgins said the public should keep this in mind when voting. He said Ireland has a two-tier health system which favours patients on their ability to pay, not on their actual needs, and that the present health system must be changed. "This current system where money can purchase treatment within weeks while those without it have to join waiting lists years in arrears is a scandal," he said. "It is a reflection on the country that has the third richest economy in Europe, that it has the second lowest level of social protection." Higgins lambasted the FF/PD government's record on the health service saying "it squandered the opportunity" to create a good health service, build homes, and improve schools. "It offered tax incentives to private investors in health while it failed to increase the number of nurses and doctors." he said. "It offers an economy of greed based on a philosophy of individualism. This view is tearing the heart out of society." Higgins says voters have the chance on Friday to select an alternative by voting Labour. "We offer our programme," he says, "based on the values of political equality, inclusion and above all a rights based citizenship to which we can all aspire."
