G a l w a y to get a t h i r d wheelie
BY KERNAN ANDREWS The Galway City Council has now developed the capability to sort dry recyclable waste. The green bin will be phased in from mid May. As a result, collection arrangements for the recycling bags will change to facilitate the introduction of the green bin this summer. From the week starting Monday May 13, until delivery of the green bin, dry recyclables will be collected in plastic bags every second week. Some households must leave their recycling bags out on brown bin day, others on grey bin day. Letters are being sent around to each household to explain the changes. The letter will inform householders if they should leave out recycling bags on the grey or brown bin day. It also includes a collection calendar showing which week grey or brown bins are collected. The council is asking the public not to confuse this letter within election literature. The council is advising the public to continue to put dry recyclables in the clear plastic bags until the green bin arrives. When it arrives, stop using the bags and put all dry recyclables, including clean food and beverage cans, in the new bin. According to Gary O'Loughlin, acting senior engineer, the changeover is necessary as it cuts down on the use of plastic and means the public will no longer have to worry about running out of the plastic bags. He said it will also eliminate the manual handling of waste which is safer for workers. Householders will no longer have to separate the dry recyclable waste at home. However, this gave a sense of ownership and participation in the system. O'Loughlin acknowledges this but says if people ensure their dry recyclable waste is properly cleaned and dried then "that will be
