G r e a t news from t h e Great Southern Hotel Killarney
BEAUTY MAY be on the outside but it's what's inside that counts! This good advice comes from the Great Southern Hotel Killarney which is about to reveal its new found inner beauty. Since October this Victorian build ing located in the heart of Killarney has undergone a massive re-develop ment p r o g r a m m e . And next week (May 17) the results will be revealed when the hotel reopens for business. The ' n e w l o o k ' Great Southern combines old world splendour with modern facilities. Spacious luxurious accommodation; a choice of restaurants; plus a com plete new Spa, including a 17m swim ming pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, mon soon shower, hydromassage baths, aromatherapy and massage will surely make guests never want to leave! "Just what you need to help yourself feel as good as we do," says manage ment at the hotel. And they are more than willing to prove it too by offering a two night break for two people to one lucky Galway Advertiser reader.

May 9 -- Europe Day -- At the European summit in Milan in May 1985, this day was pro claimed the Day of Europe, commemorating the announcement on May 9, 1950 of the project for a European Coal and Steel union. In ancient Rome, this was the fust night of the Lemuria during which the lemures, ghosts of one's ancestors, were appeased. At dead of night, the worshipper went barefoot to wash his hands in spring water, threw black beans behind him, washed his hands again and clashed bronze cymbals to summon the ghosts from the grave. May 10 -- Tliis is the first possible date for Whit Sunday. May 13 -- Feast day of Our Lady of Fatima. This commemorates the six appearances of Our Lady of the Rosary to three children in Fatima, near Estremadura in Portugal, on this day in 1917. The surviving child Lucia Santos, who became a Carmelite nun, revealed that she had received a threefold message, known as the three secrets, which she transmitted to Pope Pius XII saying that their meaning would not become clear until I960. Two have since been made public; bodies charred by fire (as in representations of hell, but applied by believers to be the Second World War) and the spread of Marxist terror from Russia, which might however be reconverted (this latter was announced in 1942 by the cardinal arcbishop of Milan, while Italy was at war with the Soviet Union, but has proved accurate none the less). The third has not been disclosed, though the sequence of earthquakes in central Italy during October 1997 prompted the Vatican to deny that it assigned the end of the world to that of the millennium.

my last legs) to reach the summit of Hvatnajoku, a dormant 2,218m vol cano from which, on a clear day, you can view a landmass the sum of Ireland's total.

An exorcism of my inherent fear of heights paid dividends in that the view was quite remarkable. A trip to Blue Lagoon is a must where the natural and supernatural meet to give relief to battle-worn hik ers with their sulphuric concoctions The city of Reyjkavic is quite beauti ful, quaint in its streetscape yet ultracosmopolitan with its haute-couturt boutiques. Awfully expensive though, 12 for a pint of Skol, not really an incentive for a Galway style night on the town! With a very temperate climate - yes serious ly - 18c average all year round, yo"'"' got a treat in store. Iceland, a land of ever-changi"? wonder, go and have a look.
