Stars of the silver screen lead vintage rally
T h e t h i r d Innishannon Steam and Vintage Rally, in a i d of I r i s h Cancer Society, t a k e s place this June Bank Holiday weekend (Sun June 2 and Mon June 3). Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, star of the 1968 movie classic, will lead a line-up of celebrity vehicles from the silver screen. Also present will be the elegant Chrysler Plymouth 1948 which appeared in the movie Circle of Friends, along with vehicles featured in the Quiet Man, The Treaty, Michael Collins, and Ryan's Daughter. Spokesperson for the event, Diarmuid Murphy says: "We are expecting at least 40,000 visitors to this years rally and it is hoped to raise over more then 40,000 in aid of cancer research. More than 1,300 entries are expected, including 35 steam engines, 150 tractors, 200 oil engines, 50 fire engines and 20 military vehicles. There will be 150 classic and vintage cars, some of these dating as far back as 1901. Rare sights on display will include vehicles that have seen action in the Second World War, such as the VW Kubelwagen. Built in 1943, it served with the 12 SS Panzer division Hitlerjugend in Normandy 1944. There will also be craft stands and various traditional working displays. Camping and caravan facilities will be available and parking is free of charge. The Irish Cancer Society is the largest voluntary hinder of cancer research in Ireland. Innishannon is a 20 minute drive from Cork City ontheN71 to Bandon.
