Pro-life group Tark Lodge WoteC welcomes psychiatrists' support on amendment
BY MARY O'CONNOR A LOCAL pro-life group has welcomed the support of two famous psychiatrists for the forthcoming referendum on abortion. In a joint statement. Professors Anthony Clare and Patricia Casey said that abortion is not a psychiatric issue and that there are no psychiatric conditions for which it is the only answer. They said they also supported the 25th Amendment to the Constitution. A spokesperson for Galway For Life said the psychiatrists' statement was a positive and enlightened contribution to the debate on abortion. The local pro-life group is campaigning for a "Yes" vote on March 6 because it believes the amendment restores legal protection to unborn babies and protects the right of pregnant women to receive all necessary medical treatment. The two professors' statement is a welcome contribution to the debate on the implications of the upcoming referendum, says Galway for Life spokesperson Eilis Grealy. "The proposed Amendment recognises that abortion is not an appropriate response to suicidal feelings. At the recent Dail hearings on abortion, the medical evidence showed that abortion itself posed a greater threat of suicide to women." She said the only alternative to clarifying the law regarding the right to life of the unborn child is to legislate whether or not abortion should be available in Ireland. In Britain, abortion is legal up to 24 weeks for any reason and up to birth where the child has a disability. "We will work enthusiastically in support of the referendum to ban abortion over the coming weeks. By voting 'Yes' to the 25th Amendment, we can prevent the introduction of abortion on demand in Ireland. GFL will also play its part in ensuring that there is a determined effort to put in place the necessary resources to create a more supportive environment for expectant mothers and their unborn children. We once again urge everyone to vote 'Yes' on March 6 to protect unborn children and their mothers."
