Charlie McCreevy to take a flutter at Cox's race night
CHARLIE MCCREEVY, the Minister for Finance will get to indulge in a flutter on the gee-gees in Galway next week, when he attends the 'Celebration Race Night' for Sen Margaret Cox's election campaign. The race night will be held on Tuesday March 5 in the Great Southern Hotel, Eyre Square, at 8pm. McCreevy will be the guest of honour. The event is both a celebration for C o x ' s friends and supporters and a fundraiser for the forthcoming general election campaign. McCreevy is a well-known punter and enjoys the traditional trip to the Galway races in August. He is making the visit as a

Arthritis information evening to benefit sufferers

He will be joined by Ken Kaar, an orthapaedic surgeon in Merlin Park Hospital, who has vast experience in surgical solutions to people with arthritic conditions. Ronan Kavanagh, consultant rheumatologist in The Bons Secours Hospital, Renmore will also speak at the event. A question and answer session will follow the talk. Admission is free and all are welcome. The Galway Branch of The Arthritis Foundation of Ireland has had a number of evening talks given by Local Doctors, Consultants, and other specialists in this field. There is a great hunger amongst ordinary people with-/ arthritis about how to manage their disease, and with waiting I lists of up to three years between the time a person is referred to a specialist and their appointment, these meetings make some effort to bridge that time gap. So as well as telling of the latest treatment available, constructive advice is frequently offered at these public meetings, and people do get a lot from attending.

BY UNA SINNOTT GALWAY'S LONG-standing crime prevention officer Sgt Hugh McGrath will retire at the end this week. McGrath has worked in crime prevention in the Galway West Garda division for the last nine years, and has been responsible for the organisation of the majority of Neighbourhood Watch and Community Alert Schemes in the county during this time. He will also be well known to business people in Galway through his inpul into the Business Watch scheme, the Campus Watch scheme, tourism seminars, fraud seminars, and countless other crime awareness initiatives. He h a s contributed regularly for several years to the Garda Report in the Galway Advertiser. Originally from Roscommon, McGrath h s a spent the last 23 yean working in Galway city. Carna, and Clifden. Galway Gardaf have yet to announce a new crime prevention officer for the area.
