COMMENT
THE FOURTH PRESIDENT The election of Erskine Childers as the fourth Presi dent of the State can be seen as signif icent at a number of levels. It is, no doubt, a great boost to Fianni Fail for while Childers generally canvassed on a non-political line, the insistance of the Coalition parties that Tom O'Higgins stood for the achievements of the new govern ment clearly indicated their intention to make the con test party-political. Now they must accept, on their own logic, that Mr. O'Higgins's defeat was a reversal for them. Mr. Childers's victory was a great personal achieve ment for the man himself. Labouring under a number of disadvantages, he emerged as the under-dog who defeated his favoured opponent by over fort times the margin which Mr. De Valera had when he retained the office in 1966. But most of all last week's results were once again an open indication of the basic common sense of the Irish electorate and a clear indication that Irish voters make up their own minds in political issues. They have shown again that, as happened when they cross-voted in the Presidential election and the P.R. referendum on the same day In June 1959, they fully retain their independence of mind on each and every separate issue. We tend to mention Mr. Childers's religion in a whisper. True, the fact that a person belongs to one denomination or another should not be a political issue in elections. Yet the fact remains that an overwhelm ingly Catholic population has elected a non-Catholic as head of state at a time when traditional--should we say tribal ?--loyalties are running high in this part of the world. It is also a fact that of the four Presidents we have had to date, two have been born outside Ireland two have been Protestants, one could not speak the national language at least at the time of his election, It is a fairly proud record and without blowing our own trumpet about it, there is no need to hide the facts from the outside world. The uniqueness of the situation can be realised if we ask what would be our reaction to the election of a Catholic monarch in Britain ? The const! tution of "liberal" Britain does not allow it--anymore than it allows the symbolic head of state to be elected in the first place ! In wishing Mr. Childers well and in looking forward to his new dynamic performance as First Citizen, we should spare a thought also for Mr. O'Higgins. He worked very hard and no doubt would have made a good President. It must come as a bitter disappoint' ment to him to be so near Aras an Uachtarain twice only to be defeated on both occasions. The Democratic process is a hard master and all those who enter on a career in politics simply have to accept that fact.
