Oct 4 : -- O n this d a y in 1779, seven-year-old S a m u e l Taylor Coleridge pulled a knife o n h i s brother Frank, ran away, and spent the night in the stormy open; t w o years later, his father dreamt h e w a s dying. Afterwards, Coleridge preferred t o publish o n O c t 4 , a n d c h o s e that d a y for both h i s marriages. It is also the feastday of St Francis of Assisi, founder in 1209 of the Order of Friars M i n o r (Franciscans) and o n e of the most beloved medieval saints. His calling c a m e late, after he had been deeply affected having exchanged clothes with a beggar for one day o n a pilgrimage t o R o m e . Like-minded men (and soon women) j o i n e d the Order, which remained without a formal rule for many years. Francis received t h e stigmata in 1224 while o n a retreat at Monta L a Verna and he requested t o be buried in the criminals' cemetery on the Colle dTnferno, but his body w a s brought t o the church of St George in Assisi, where it remained until in 1230 it w a s secretly removed t o the great basili ca; there it remained hidden until 1818, when after a 52-day search found it d e e p beneath the high altar o f the lower c h u r c h . Pius X I I declared h i m patron saint of Italy in 1939 a n d parliament g a v e its formal approval in February 1958. Oct 7 -- O u r Lady of the Rosary. Although the habit of repeating prayers, counted off in a string of beads, g o e s back to early Christianity, the rosary itself did not become a popular devotion until the early fifteenth century; first promoted by the Carthusians a n d then by the Dominicans, w h o spon sored Confraternities of the Rosary and until 1984 had the exclusive right to bless rosaries.
