Man in custody following Newcastle attack
A man has been remanded in custody following a serious assault which took place in Gaelcarraig Park at the weekend. John Quigley of Cam Ard was arrested following a Garda investigation into the incident which left a young man in hospital with serious head injuries. Quigley appeared before a special sitting of Westport District Court yesterday afternoon, charged with attempting to commit serious harm. He has been remanded in custody to Casllerea Prison and will appear in court in Galway after the summer recess. In the early hours of Saturday morning a young man was badly beaten in a laneway in Gaelcarraig Park. The man, who is 24 and from the area, was found at 3am and taken to UCHG with multiple fractures and head injuries. He has since been transferred to Merlin Park Hospital and he is now in a stable condition. It is understood a second man was arrested following the incident and he was later released without charge. Gardai have interviewed the victim, along with conducting a thorough search and house to house enquiries in the area. Another man is still being sought in relation to the attack.
