RTE replies to criticism
Last week the directors of I r e l a n d W e s t hit o u t a t ; R T E for the poor coverage given to events in t h e West in general and for their deplorable absence of television coverage on the St. P a t r i c k ' s D a y parade. But R T E deos n o t accept this criticism a t all. A spokesman contacted our office a n d said t h e r e m a r k s were most unfair a n d u n justified. " W e cannot accept this at a l l , " she said, " w e have a n u m b e r of local cor r e s p o n d e n t s a n d free lance c a m e r a m e n in the West w h o feed us information a n d n e w s continually." The RTE Information Department went on to point out that on last F r i d a y n i g h t t h e o p e n i n g of the Regional College, t h e D e c c a naviga tional system, t h e visit t o G a l w a y by the O m a g h school students a n d t h e Alcoholic A n o n y m o u s Congress all r e ceived extensive coverage. " A s well as that we have a radio station in Galway t h a t transmits live to p r o g r a m m e s h e r e and we established t h e Irish language station at Casla last year. T h i s m u s t surely show t h a t t h e r e is n o evidence to suggest we ignore t h e W e s t . "

At an informal a n d friendly Civic R e c e p t i o n last week nearly o n e h u n d r e d y o u n g s t u d e n t s of m i x e d d e n o m i n a tion were welcomed t o G a l way for a t h r e e day visit. T h e s t u d e n t s , all from t h e O m a g h (C. Tyrone) Inter-School H i s t o r y Society, were on their first visit t o t h e W e s t a n d spent their tour thoroughly s a m p l i n g o u r city's historic a n d cultural past. M r . R o b e r t Molloy, T.D., and Aid. F i n t a n C o o g a n , T . D . , spoke w a r m l y at t h e reception a n d extended every welcome. " O u r hearts a n d d o o r s a r e always o p e n to y o u , " said M r . M o l l o y , a n d Aid. C o o g a n u r g e d " l e t t h e b o r d e r be a political t h i n g only a n d never a barrier to m e n a n d i d e a s . " A letter was read at t h e reception from M r . T h e 1973 Player Wills sponsored T o p s of t h e T o w n competition got off to a great start. D u r i n g t h e four n i g h t s there were near capacity audiences. T h e s t a n d a r d of t h e various g r o u p s this year was exceptionally high a n d a remarkable enthusiasm was generated which was n o t i c e able even in t h e audience. T h e t w o g r o u p s that e m e r ged to t h e final b y a very n a r r o w verdict were t h e C o n nacht L a u n d r y a n d t h e G a l way Banks. T h e adjudicator, Miss Marjorie Courtney, c o m m e n t e d that the c o m p e t i tion, n o w in its second year, would grow from s t r e n g t h to s t r e n g t h as she had n o d o u b t that there was an excellent a m o u n t of u n t a p p e d talent h e r e in Galway. W h e r e a s Galway does n o t have a great n a m e for variety shows of this t y p e , it was obvious from t h e excellent a t t e n d a n c e each night that t h e r e was a place in G a l w a y for variety a n d that t h e r e was p l e n t y of talent t o provide it for the people.
