Fresh air as you drive
by Mary O'Connor

Beware bogus African letters
by Keith Kelly

THE WESTERN Health Board has come up with a novel idea to promote smoke-free driving in the region. It has launched a car air freshener which contains a strong message about the hazards of smoking in cars. Smoking in vehicles increases the exposure of those nearby to harmful chemicals and opening windows cannot protect drivers or passengers from the effects of tobacco smoke, it warns. Eight out of 10 people, including smokers, prefer a smokefree vehicle, it says The air freshener idea was the brainchild of the WHB's health promotion staff acting on a suggestion from a former member of the board, CUr Peadar O'Tuathail. Dr Sheelah Ryan, the chief executive of the WHB, described the initiative as highly practical. "In o n e of the many debates at this board about the health hazards of smoking, members suggested that smoking in cars and other vehicles needed to be addressed. Our health promotion staff came up with an idea on how to implement this in the practical guise of a car air freshener." She acknowledged the help of the board, especially former member Peadar O'Tuathail, in highlighting the important issue of smoking. " H e first suggested transport as a target area." A media campaign to promote the initiative is being organised, she said, and these air fresheners will be widely available throughout the region. Texaco, Statoil, and Esso filling stations will distribute them free to their customers during the campaign.Taxis and buses are also being targeted for distribution.

Attending the recent Millennium Mass celebration in Monivea were L-R Virginia Moyles, Marc Roberts, Fr Pat Donohue, Paddy Moyles and Ger Cooke.

THE BUSINESS c o m m u n i t y h a s been warned by the Gardai not to b e d u p e d by l e t t e r s which are being sent from Africa in r e l a t i o n t o budget surpluses. The so-called "advance fee fraud" is, according to the Gardai, becoming more frequent in this country recently, with three Galway business men having received letters from Nigeria asking for bank account information in return for a share in a budget surplus. The letters, which originate in west Africa, and from Nigeria in particluar, explain that a surplus of 30 million US dollars has been discovered due to overinvoicing. In order for the cash to be transferred an Irish bank account is needed, and the recipient of the letter is asked to send on the address of me bank where the funds can be transferred, and the bank account number. In return for co-operating in the transaction, the letter promises the bank account holder 30 per cent of the fund. A small fee is requested from the recipient of the letter for payment of "various taxes, legal fees, and bribes in order for the funds to be released".
