Local schools to learn about ageing

L O C A L P R I M A R Y schools are being targeted by the Department of Education as part of an initiative aimed at gen erating a positive attitude a m o n g school children to ageing a n d older people. A new C D - R o m , called Young and Old, has been distrib uted to the schools to help get the message across. It com bines the expertise of N U I Galway authorities in the field and the w e b skills of the local c o m p a n y , Project a n d Information Management. Dr Eamon O ' S h e a of the newly formed Centre for Health Economics and Social Policy at NUI Galway says the proj ect is exciting. "We are delighted to be part of this initiative. We believe it will have a major impact o n fostering inter-generational relationships and solidarity in our society." A n u m b e r of Galway schools, including St Michael's Boys School in M e r v u e a n d Scoil Bhride in Shantalla, took part in usabili ty t e s t i n g of t h e C D - R O M . This included providing valu able feedback during its development. Paul Munroe o f St Michael's School says the C D will be very useful to teachers as few aids are available yet to help t h e m i m p l e m e n t t h e revised curriculum. "The integrated approach and l e a r n i n g m e t h o d o l o g i e s u s e d in t h i s C D - R O M l i n k superbly with the revised cur riculum currently being intro duced in our schools." An Irish l a n g u a g e version of this C D will b e distributed to the Gaelscoileanna shortly. T h e c o n t e n t s a r e a l s o avail able on the internet. A teach e r s ' h a n d b o o k , a l s o d e s i g n e d in G a l w a y b y P r o p e l l e r Design, accompanies the C D - R O M . ' T h i s education product, which is designed and developed in Galway, sets a new standard for technology-based prod ucts aimed specifically at Irish schools," says Edel Murphy of Project and Information Management. T h e initiative w a s funded by t h e National C o u n c i l on A g e i n g a n d O l d e r P e o p l e w i t h h e l p from t h e H e a l t h Promotion Unit of the Department of Health and Children.
